I recently bought a Sako AV in 300 Win. I had never loaded this calibre before and was suprised when I seated bullets touching the rifling my OAL lenght is around 3.6 inches vs SAAMI 3.34. Has anyone else ever run into this? It almost seems to have freebore like a weatherby.

just checked the loads for my Rem 700 in 300 Winny...3.455 at .03 off the lands with a 180 Hornady flat base.

SAAMI OAL specs don't mean much........Winchester settled on 3.340 because that's the same as the 30-06 and they designed the 300 Win Mag to be "a 30 caliber magnum that would fit a standard (read 30-06) length action"......even though thier own Model 70 had a 3.6" mag box when chambered in the H&H catridges......never could figure that out....best thing for a Model 70 in 300 Win is to remove the mag box spacer....giving you a 3.6" box rather than 3.4".....
Your Sako mag box should be 3.7", the same as a Rem 700 long action...

I have six Sakos, one L579, one L61R, one A-III, two A-V's, one M995, and one 75-V. I haven't measured the M995 or the 75 yet, but I do know that the rest of them do have some freebore.

I have had a couple of a-3 sako in .300 win mag. Both had long throats, so long you could seat the bullets out almost to the end of the magazine, easily as long as .300 wby. Both shot great, and would take loads that blew the primers out of short throated rifles.
