Hello. i have been lurking this site for about a year now and i thought it was about time i took a more active role in this forum. Basically i came here with a very limited knowledge of guns and gun laws in general. I have been brought up in an anti gun society, and after doing casual research on this gun control stuff i came to realize just how silly most of it is.

I was wondering if there is a place that shoots down ALL of the myths that gun control advocates use. Also how to communicate effectively with people who don't want to change their point of view even when they are confronted with logic and facts. Basically i want to learn how to debate effectively.

Also "youth forum" that sounds relevant to my situation how do i get in?

To get into the youth forum stay on the main page after you sing in/log on. On the blue taskbar right under all the sponsors advertisements there is a thing that says "User CP" on the far left hand side of the bar. Click it. Then once the page is loaded you will see "Your Control Panel". Again it's on the left hand side of the page. Click on "Group Memberships". It will take you to another page where you can ask for permision to join a few groups. I would suggest you join the CGN Youth Wing, Off Topics Usergroups and the Equipment Exchange Usergroup. It'll take a day or 2 for you to be approved by the mods but don't worry about it. Just sign in again the next day or the day after and you should be good to go. Hope you have fun here on CGN. This site is awesome. Good Luck

Hi, nice to hear that Max. The most important thing to a debate is remain calm and listen. The minute you start boiling you'll start to lose control of the situation and make a bad name not only for yourself, but to gun owners in general. You'll find that most debates revolve around invisible stats about gun crime and that guns are "weapons designed to kill". These individuals are also unaware how or what guns are and can do. I highly suggest you read up on how all gun actions work, and what bullets can do of various calibres. Never put something out that you do not fully understand or you'll find yourself in a hot spot. Most importantly, it's COMMON SENSE!
Remember, Guns are tools. They become weapons when you apply them as such. A rock is a rock until you pick it up to smash someone's skull in. Now it is a weapon. Should we ban all rocks? Assault is a term used when you make an aggressive action to cause harm on an individual. So any weapon is an assault weapon. In prison, plastic forks can be assault weapons. Guns don't make killing easier, it's just a bit safer. I'd rather shoot a bear than go at it with a claymore. Even then, I'd need the appropriate gun for the job. e.g. appropriate tool for the job. You ain't gonna hammer a nail with a screwdriver and you ain't gonna screw a screw in a hammer. They work to some extent, but you'd do way better with the right tool. See the reason for various calibres now? Remember, you are educating as much as you are debating. Try to find something that you're opponent can relate to so you can dissect the subject of firearms so they can understand it. Try to use their strength against them. Stats with real stats. If they are self righteous and egotistical, tell them how the media has warped peoples minds and basically made them sheep believing what they see on TV. Most ego hipster types automatically start losing their head to that because they deem themselves above media influence (their all unique and everything).

This is just scrapping the surface and everyone has their own way of doing it, but I do believe being respectful, keeping your cool, listening and having knowledge of your topic will always make for a successful debate. Apply common sense and rational thought. This will come with experience. Most comebacks are emotion based like I hate it, I don't like, they are evil, etc, etc. Guns are simple equipment designed 400+ years ago and have not developed any self awareness in that time. It's the person, not the gun. eg. Dawson shooting. He had a history of issues yet no one took him seriously. Not even his parents even though he was stockpiling all this stuff. Who gets the blame? Video games and guns. No one paid attention or cared about him. He must have felt very alone and wanted attention or a way out but no one stops to question that because it's easier to attack things that don't fight back. I point to the loss of human to human interaction and lack of personal responsibility as a source for school shootings. We have all these electronics and some have replaced most of their day to day interactions with them. We have people who just sit and stare into their phones without greeting or acknowledging the people around them. Hunting, hiking, fishing, biking, or camping provide excuses to get away from all this technology and enjoy the more fundamentals of living and our surroundings. Firearms provide a great security tool for outdoor adventures especially if you're not superman, or can have the best hand eye coordination for bows and arrow. As anyone can tell you, nature makes sure you pay attention to what's around you :p

Welcome! Basically, cgn is the canadian gun information mecca, as you may have noticed.

Since you want to learn to combat anti-firearms sentiment, you've got your head in the right place.

My first piece of advice, following A0jc's, is to always remain calm and friendly. Anti's love to be scared, if you're calm reasonable and friendly, it pretty much shatters all of their preconceptions and leaves them bewildered and lost.

At about that point, offer to show them what shooting is like. Of course, you'll need your PAL and RPAL, which if you don't have, I suggest you get... because it's kindof odd fighting for firearms rights without being able to have them yourself :p (and they're a lot of fun).....

Anyways, in my experience, I have never had anyone leave the range more afraid or anti then they were before. I'm faily certain with the exception of one, everyone who has accompanied me has gained an appreciation of the shooting sports, several have gotten their liscences, many more ask to come out shooting and defend gun ownership now, and some merely just thought it was fun but wasn't their thing. (The one person who didn't like it was a rather sheltered city raised guy who is so terrified of loud noises that he jumps when doors slam, so he had a melt down and we had to take him home, though afterwards he apologised and said he'd like to come out to an only .22 caliber range).

Congrats on doing some critical thinking on your own MF.
If you keep doing that in your life, you will do well.
I was one who used to swallow the paplum I was fed, until I finally woke up to the real world, not what I was being fed as reality.
You seem to have arrived there sooner than I did.
Kudos to you, and welcome to the site.

Well yes, but i was wondering if there was a "gunfacts.info" sort of website for all the Canadian gun control myths.

here's the thing, Max. It's better to discover these myths by asking lurking and asking around. The path to these discoveries will be just as enlightening as the result. It'll allow you to see dissenting opinions on an idea and figure out what really works for you. Simply getting all the myths from one site is no better than being a sheep since you'll be regurgitating everything the site says. Get multiple references from multiple gun owners from multiple heritage and background to get multiple answers so you can counterpoint to any point against you. It seems like a lot of work, but you seem like a very capable individual able to think for yourself so I'd rather keep your options as broad as possible.

But if you really need some place to start:
http://www.cdnshootingsports.org/tenmyths.html

The political discussion, legalese, and black rifle forum is quite helpful. Black rifle because most arguments (i've come across) will deal with such guns and from time to time, there will be good info on why they should be legal/non restricted. Also, you'll never find a site that will counter all myths because myths can be fabricated right on the spot. So you'll have to do with the most common, then use your knowledge to counter the rest. Good luck.
