i just picked up a 1943 no4 mk1 * 5 groove barrel , it has a marking on the left side of the receiver RB 12/46 what does this mean?

I have seen hundreds of Long Branches and this is a new marking to me. is it etched, pantographed, matrix dotted or what? How the marking was applied is a good clue as to when, if not where or by whom. Pictures?

ok heres a pic

The "B" is actually an B inside an L, it was Long Branches stamp. Maybe a refurb marking? Although Im not sure if LB stamped refurbs. But whatever happened it happened in December of 1946 at the Long Branch Factory.

Agreed, that LB is a Long Branch marking. Is the rifle a Mk 1/3 or a Mk1*? Can you tell if it's been rebuilt? What type of back sight does it have? Butt plate? This is interesting. Could this be the sighting of a Long Branch rebuild? All Long Branch rebuilds that I have seen have been without any FTR markings or other indications, so far, anyway.
It looks like it's been blasted.

LB Markings

Check the barrel to see if there is a similar "R" on it, which would mean a replacement barrel.

It is possible that this is a replacement receiver. Does the serial number of the rifle look original factory, or does it look like it may have been hand stamped?
.

Fascinating...first I've seen. It almost has to be a Long Branch factory refurb marking. Being just post war, maybe at that point they were planning to stamp refurbs, changing their minds later.

The buttstock is CA marked...interesting that. I believe LB had morphed into CA by then.

??

My 1946 Cno7 has a completely unmarked buttstock, although the forend is LB C Broad arrow marked.

My 49 LB had CA on everything.

Transitional time...

serial looks original and the barrel is marked 43

Beautiful rifle!

Come to think of it, I've seen lots of backgrounds on CGN where people take their firearms pics, but never a bathroom sink. You've got quite a modern set-up there. Swanky. :D

I'm still a fan of the 70's era floral couch or harvest gold shag carpet, though.

The black steel butt plate is post war, and what was used on the '49 and '50 LB's.
The sight is the predecessor of the "C" marked backsight also see on the '49 and '50 models. The "P" band as noted is Pakistani. That is odd. The CA on the pistol grip is post Long Branch/SAL era. Interesting piece. I note that another such marked Long Branch has been posted, so this appears to be a sighting of a marked Long Branch/CA rebuild. Interesting. They were in the midst of building .22's at this time. They finished the sniper program in '46 as well.
PS, the sink is fine, but where are your socked feet? That's usually what is seen ! ;)
