Longer Barreled 22

long barrel

I think the Remington 40x was standard with a 28 inch barrel, also there was one of the cz models that had a longer barrel, not sure if it was over 27 inches though. I think if you went back through the books, there would be quite a few, BSA martinis, Winchester low walls, etc.

Correct me if im wrong but i believe I read somewhere that a barrel any longer than about 16" on 22LR will actually start to decrease the velocity of the bullet? Anyone know anything about this?

what i read was that most 22LR rounds need 16" barrel to burn up the powder.
in turn any excess barrel after the powder is completly burnt will slow the bullet down. so give or tale 16"

longer barrels are much quieter. Whether they make less noise, or just the fact that the noise is that much further away from my face, I don't know. I think the main advantage, though, is that you have a longer sight radius when shooting with peeps or irons. I've used a number of 26" target 22's, and I think there might have been a 28 or even 30" single shot winchester or cooey in there too.

agreed with prosper, my cz is very quiet with subsonics, those cb caps or whatever they are called are incredible quiet, no earplugs required

closest i can get to a supressor i think

My BSA Martini Model 12's have 29" barrels (1" at breech, tapering to .75" at muzzle).
The new CCI Quiet-22 ammo makes so little noise that I can shoot it without ear protection and not feel any discomfort at all. Almost as quiet in my Win Model 67 with a much slimmer 27" barrel.
