longer courses of fire in IPSC

So I posted this on Global Village and have been surprised by the responses so far.
how many of you would like to see longer COF's in IPSC? my suggestion on GV was "Long" COF's being upped to 40-42 rounds, and then a new one "Extended" being allowed to have 50-52 rounds. In order to make it not too difficult and have people really spraying ammo around I thought maybe make it static paper and steel on the "Ext" COF, no movers.
what do you guys think?
What was the response there? I suggested 36 (which it once was - and was great fun) once there and got ignored.

I'd go with 36-40 as an increase, but more would as Garand mentions, cause a backlog stage unless a MD was really on the ball in how he scheduled and laid out a match.

response has been slightly higher for "No" actually. which surprised me.
As Storm mentions, even small kids can carry 6 mags on their person with no issue. it just comes down to placing stuff right.

shot a really fun match in Kentville one year IPSC1 set up 4-50 rd long courses and we went at them, everyone was game for them (a lot of the top guys weren't going to be there) everyone had a blast! as far as juniors my kid always carried 5 on the belt and 1 for the gun and even Dansy can tell you "he ain't that big!"

Meh.

I'd just have the two boys shoot their SP01s in open, and wrap the mags around front.

I'm sure they wouldn't care, they'd probably welcome the extra shooting too.

Hmmm. Not a bad excuse for a couple new open guns. Should slide that idea past the wife...:D

The more rounds I get to put down range the happier I am, the happier I am the safer the universe is.

I'm all for 32+ round stages as long as they're lame

WHAT?

My 15 year old carries 6 Glock mags on his belt with no problem as does my 17 year old daughter....

She acutally used all of them at last years Drama Daze match on one stage laughing the whole time while missing.

I did ten mags on that mud stage with all the mini plates at your Drama daze a couple of years ago when it was pouring rain... I wish I had of had another one as I ran out with one popper still up.

I think the 32 round max is decent. Longer course of fire require more shooting but also more patching more scoring more everything. You can only put one squad through at a time on a stage so you could end up with a bottle neck on that course of fire. At our level 3 matches ( restigouche) we have several field course, but since different squads rotate through different courses of fire the shoots it goes really smooth. Very little down time.

My 2 cents worth.

In order to make it not too difficult and have people really spraying ammo around I

And why would you want to do that..

make it hard.. make it lots of spraying. and make it everything in between.. just give it the flexibility to course designers can do what they want..

I like the options of longer courses, but don't put limitations on it other then the round counts.

With High Caps sure, but a little ridiculous with 10 rounds mag's...
I for one don't mind 10 round mags. In the USA they have that Limited 10 division too. It doesn't turn into an equipment race with who can get the biggest mags. Everyone has the same limit and I like it. We all plan the same and think the same during the walk through and playing. I like it.

Changing mags is a fun part of the game. I like IPSC to be more than just running around with one mag pulling the trigger. Put a bit of thought into it.

Shooting more is good but like Walter said I know some shooter that right now their 4 mag's are in the middle of there back....we should be thinking about the junior!
Is it bad having mags in the middle of your back? I don't see the big deal. I see shooter of all levels with mags going all the way around and then carrying extra in the pockets.

I enjoy lots of shooting but the issue for some will be:
A) Not enough mags, or not enough body space for more mags.*
B) Dropping mags to clear jams, feed issues etc. Sometimes shooters run out of mags on the current longer courses.
If you can afford the ammo for a match and the match fee you can likely afford two more mags and even the pouches.

Sometimes shooters run out of mags on short courses too because of jams, not being prepared, not reloading mags, etc. Should we limit all stages to the one mag in the gun so no one runs out or make it so the bulk of the competitors have a good time. Its up to the competitor to ensure their gun works and feeds correctly.

36 to 40 rounds would be nice, I got hooked into IPSC largely because of the large coarses of fire.
The more the merrier I'd say
I think you will attract more new competitors and juniors at that with more large stages.

If you take the total shooting time for a stage it usually isn't too long. It is the reseting and scoring. Taking extra workers away for the smaller stages and putting them on the larger ones is key. Setting a good score recording method also helps. I don't see adding 15 or so rounds to a stage as a major hurdle for a good match director and crew.

Not every stage is going to be 50 rounds (although that might be fun!) so I don't see this as a big change or impact on a match.

What attracted you to IPSC? Was it the short stages with 10 rounds or the long courses with 32 rounds with doors here, a charge line there, an activator here, a mover over there, a window here, etc.? The most fun I have and see others having is on the longer courses. That's what gets people interested IMHO.

Heck Google or YouTube for IPSC stage videos and most of them are the longer courses of fire and not the short "stand in this box" stages. That tells me something. :D

most often lame ass stages are already 32 rounds stage so the rules are more than OK for that reason
Even in the US in the nationals open, limited what ever...... you see 1 or 2 big stages with 32 round the rest turns around 28-30

and remember, you test the ability of shooting not phsycal ability
the way i see it the EXTENDED COF gonna turn into spray n' pray type shooting mixed with the 100 meters dash

it's fine with me if you like spray around bullets but 32 max is the right choice

the EXTENDED COF should be rule as article 10.2.10 of the IPSC rule book 2006

Hope to see you all at QUEBEC provincial 2008 in EOHC

the "no movers" thing was just to placate the whiners. I am all for multiple movers, steel etc on +32 round COF's. hell I'd love to see a match with all +50 rounds COF's. Follow all the IPSC rules, except round count. of course it wouldn't be sanctioned, but it would be fun.

heck.. make that 50 steel plates then you have yourself a stage worth shooting!!!!!!! Even the scoring is a breeze.. the RO does not even have to leave the shooting line to score it ;)
