Okay, I suspect Clancy will have this information real handy......
but does anyone know of, the longest recorded successful strikes on live targets in wartime, when using the M1 Garand?

Or if known, any info about results for long distance target shooting, at known distances, as well.

I prefer to hear about the issue peep sights, but I am curious to hear about the M1C and M1D sniper variants too.

Cheers......

When the M-1 was the U.S. service rifle, it was regularly used in the National Matches at Camp Perry. They originally used regular M2 ball up to 300 yards and .30 AP at 500 and 600. It was found that the 168 grain HP bullet shot better at longer ranges than the 152 grain ball round.
I'd be very surprised if there are any records about combat shooting with any M-1.
Get a copy of Hatcher's Book of the Garand. There's a whole chapter about the M-1 as a match rifle.

Got that book, have read it more than once, not much details on anything past 600 yards.
Thank you for your limited responce sunray, now the board is clear for experienced first hand responces or persons with access to documented reports.

Senich's "Complete Book of US Sniping" says that 600 yards was about the max for the M1C and D, but mainly because they couldn't get consistent match ammo for them in Korea (they'd usually end up using the M2 AP round). If they really HAD to go out further, they could always use the 1903A3 with Unertl scope.

"...experienced first hand responces(sic) or persons with access to documented reports..." Grasshopper, there are no documented reports. Records like that were not kept.

Gentlemen,
I don't have data on the Longest shot, But I do have a file that might be of interest. It's a G-2 Report about Japanese POW's. They stated that when they were under fire by M1 Garands they said that the percentage of hits were VERY HIGH WITHIN A 600 METER RANGE. I also have somewhere around here the report from G-2 on German info and the M1 Garand.
Thanks again
Clancy
ps play nice Plus that meter comes out to about 660 yds. Combat shooting
