That is good to hear,I once trimmed the toenails on a small mouse at 250 yards with a .22 short in a 30 mile an hour cross wind so I know where you are comng from.Oh yea and it was at night.

You can always put you money where you mouth, or in this case typing finger is.
Come on out and I would be happy to school you on shooting real guns and at REAL long range.
Typically those of us with more than a single brain cell shoot in the daylight however.

Longest shot on a deer..338 yards with my Model 71 348 Win.
Longest shot on a predator...256 yards on fox at full run with my A-Bolt in 22-250(thats what my buddy ranged him at before he started running)
Longest shot with a shotgun...107 paces on a pair of geese with my Gold 10-10ga, 3.5 with a 2 1/4oz. load copperplated lead 2's back when lead was legal.
Longest shot on a predator...256 yards on fox at full run with my A-Bolt in 22-250(thats what my buddy ranged him at before he started running)

Longest big game shot, 547 yards on a smallish WT buck, no wind, good tracking snow if needed. 270, 130sst.
Longest small game: last year, 535 yard coyote, 22-250, 55 BT.
Longest .22: A crow on a tree top at what must have been 125-150 yards. I was 14 and bored, Savage 24, open sights. Took 5 shots to hit him, talk about "hold-over".

I have made 2 one shot kills on deer at over 1000 yds. The first was a Mule Buck with 7mm Rem Mag and was a pure fluke. My buddy had just emptied his .270 Win at this buck running at long range, and got back in the truck disgusted. I jokingly said "do you want me to show you how it's done". I stepped out and held about 20 ft high and about 30 ft ahead of the running deer and touched off. A second or two the deer stumbled and went down. Perfect lung shot. I never told my buddy that I was more surprised than him, and he wient right back to town and traded his .270 for a 7mm Mag.
Second time was a called shot on a whitetail doe. A buddy and I were parked on a hill overlooking and glassing the river bottom. I noticed a whitetail doe in a clearing at a little over 1,000 yds. We both had either ### tags and I said that my buddy should shoot the doe as he only wanted meat. He said "Hell neither of us could hit her from here." I assured him that I could and he said I couldn't. We agreed that if I could, it would be his tag not mine. He agreed and I made the shot. She took a step just as I was squeezing the trigger and it took her through the liver instead of the lungs. She went about 10 yds. and piled up. My buddy could hartdly believe it but he cut his tag as agreed.
I have also hit several crows at 500 yds with a .22-250. Not every try, but mayby 30% of the time. Very satisfying! Long range shooting is a matter of practice. I have shot thousands of rounds at gophers & crows with various .22 centerfires and it is surprising how good you can get with practice. I regard any shot at big game at 500 yds or less as a gimme if they are standing & broadside.

I have only made two nice shots so far, but I have lots of time to get out there.
My first was a ground hog. Dad spotted it as it crossed the fence line onto the property. The challenge to the shot was it was about ten minutes before a brutal thunderstorm hit. So the winds were gusting between 35-45 mph. I was on a 45 degree angle wrt the wind. Hit him with the first round from my trusty 243 Ruger M77 HB. My brother tried to hit it for fun with a 22-250 and had about 16" of drift at 225 yards.
My longest kill so far was on a raccoon. Came out of the same tree line three nights in a row. My brother and I had tried a couple of times, but the guns were not sighted in for the range. So I got my ballistics figured out, and rolled him on the fourth night at 420 yards with my 243.
I do practice out to 550 yards from time to time (in between crops). That was our longest range for a while, but now we have a 1000+ (when the crops are off) so I am looking forward to honing my skills.

140 yards on a whitetail doe. .308 shooting Federal Fusions. Perfect heart shot. She wasnt quite running, but was moving pretty good.
Lol, we just dont get the opportunities for long shots where I hunt. Anything over 100 is considered long due to the thickness of the bush.

Well since 09 was the first for my firearms and hunting license, I was able to get myself a nice 4x4 buck. After morning to night everyday that week i ended up getting him the last morning of shot gun. Got him at just over 150 paces from my stand with my Browning Gold Hunter with a 3" Slugger, rifled choke tube, and just with the plain old bead sight.
Long shot I would say not for most if not all, but I sure impressed myself when he dropped.

Closest.........5 feet with the same gun. The damned deer almost ran me over and I had to defend myself!

I'm not sure about daddylong legs, but my leica 1200 range finder works very well out to about 1180 yds, which is 2 yds short of what buddy's swarovski (sp) said.

I was going to say, that most of us who shoot long use an LRF of some sort.
The Leica or Swarovsky's being the best of the lot as they will range to 1200 or 1500 yards respectively. I have run both and found that under optimum conditions they will exceed their maximum rated yardage.

The first shot was easy to measure. We were by a fenceline and the deer dropped 140 paced yards across the quarter section fence. A quarter section is 880 yds by 880yds. the second shot was paced by boyh me and my buddy. I am 6'6" with long legs and my paces are a little over 1 yd. Both of us agreed that it was just over 1000 yds. Both of these shots were made in the early 70's before range finders were common. I have been hunting for over 45 yrs now and with experience you can get good at estimating ranges on the plains. Things like where is the next quarter section fence, and how large (or small) the animal appears in your scope. I have always used a Leupold set on 10X for long range work on big game.
I never claimed yardage as measured by a surveyor's chain, but thats my story and I am sticking to it.

** 630 yds (laser ranged) on gophers with a custom 243 Mauser 98. I hit 2 gophers out of three shots and decided that was enough for the day as it wasn't going to get any better than that.
** 240 yds on a gopher with a .22 rimfire target rifle.
Does killing a 55 gal drum at 1500 yds with a 243 count?
