I'm looking into getting a scout mount for my SKS and was wondering how long of a scope I can use without the casings hitting it.
I remember, I had a NcSTAR SPB2220B which is 8.5 inches long with the extended mount maxed out forward and you would get the odd strike.Without the extender you will have to make a deflector.

I know where you are coming from about drill and tap but the bottom line it is the best option with the SKS. I found the Choate mount to be to tall and did not work for me. I am working on a mount that is made from a Weaver Converta Mount drill and tap..almost finished will use a 3x9x42 compact scope. The ScoutScopes mount is a great mount but what needed is the removable rail to be longer so the optic can be mounted more forward. That looks like a great deal but I'd like to be able to use stripper clips...
I'd just like to be able to mount a scope with decent magnification (4X-7X if possible) without having to drill and tap the receiver and allows the use of stripper clips. Is this even possible?
Since we're on the topic, if I'm using the scout mount, what needs to be removed to take off the gas tube for cleaning? I know the scope will have to come off but how about the rail? It looks like it will get in the way of the lever rotating up all the way...
Do you have the mount in front of you. The scope stays attached to the rail and the rail is removed from the mount, there are four set screws that hold the rail to the mount. Remove the rail from the mount with the optic attached for rifle break down then put the rail back on and tighten the set screws....retains zero.Since we're on the topic, if I'm using the scout mount, what needs to be removed to take off the gas tube for cleaning? I know the scope will have to come off but how about the rail? It looks like it will get in the way of the lever rotating up all the way...
