longest shot with 22lr?

According to my calculations a bullet shot at a 45 degree angle at rimfire velocity of 1250 ft/s will travel 4.6 miles (in outer space) fortunately on earth we have air and air resistance/drag. Two miles seems about right...

I like to push mine out to 200 from time to time (iron sights), still haven't tried with a scope however. Most rounds usually land in the black. Come to think of it, I shoot my 'rinco JW14 much better than any other rifle I own (hidden flinch ? :runaway:) . Yet it has some of the ugliest sights I have ever had the displeasure to use.

Thanks everyone for the stories. Thanks to 'notsorichguy' and 'cyclone' for the awesome link. Good stuff(ing)!

Longest for me is the turkey silhoutte at the CF range (385m) from my Anschutz. I could actually fire the shot, glance over to my spotting scope and spot the impact. Pretty cool. I should mention that my "spotting scope" is actually an astronomical telescope and I was running about 150 power to curb the BS comments.

I was also able to see the bullet trace/impact through a 3-12X40 scope. Pretty cool for sure.

I shot the moon once. The crater is still visible. Does that count?

That only counts if it was a sliver moon. A full moon is a huge target and is way too easy to hit. Unless, of course, you're referring a different kind of moon, in which case the offending party probably deserved that crater and had some difficulty sitting down for awhile.:kickInTheNuts::eek::D

Here's a couple pics of makeshift gongs I used. I was using Federal 510 40gr The holes in the lawnmower flywheel were punched from 200 and 300 meters

FWIW here's some food for thought. Consider the damage a cheap pellet rifle can do with an 8.5gr pellet @ 500ft/s. Now take your 40gr .22 bullet which weighs over four times as much, and it's still traveling 500 ft/s at 800yd! Now for a scope that dials up 178.5MOA...:D:D

ghostsaww: in outer space, i'm pretty sure it would never stop unless it hit something. i'll agree with you, in a vaccum, as you say would be a better statement.
