What is the availability of longhorn steer horns in Canada for powder horns like??

wanted to try and make a couple of horns [for fun] & can't seem to locate any - Crazy Cow in the USA has em, but won't ship until you hit $50

ebay want's retarded prices.

Cow horns are easy enough to find just not longhorn.

How the hell you gonna carry a long horn full of powder around? U must be thinkin more of a short horn?A friend of mine raises them and probably has a few kickin around...I just hope you is 8 feet tall or so!!

Bleached skulls with the long horns sell for around 600 to 800 in Calgary, you are not going to find one for 50 bucks,

Track of the Wolf wants too much. Go to a slaguhter house, they sometimes give them away in small lots. Longhorns do not make good powder horns if you plan resale. Most folks are looking for a curved horn the fits to the body.

fraserdw is right on the money. It hasn't been mentioned there are lefts and rights. A horn that hangs well on the right side may not hang well on the left. Decide which side you want to carry it on and then find a horn that fits. In my opinion a horn with a compound curve and a finished length of about 12 - 14" is about right for everyday use, if not a little on the large side. I like the pouring tip to turn down - not up when in the carry position - but that is just a personal preference.

Our local Tandy leather has lots of horns in stock, so there's a good chance the rest of them do as well.

My son is sort of into leather-working, and kept meeting the same wild looking guy buying many horns at a time. Naturally he assumed that he wanted them for powder horns, but that's a lot of powder horns....................... Turns out that he was buying them to make drinking horns . Apparently there's a market in the Creative Anachronism crowd. I didn't know we even had a Creative Anachronism crowd.

Drinking horns ... :)

Actually, you can alter the shape of horn quite a bit with the application of heat ~ straighten them, bend them, even flatten them out

since I'm not lugging anything around the bush and the horn is just to feed the bess 'volume' is better :)

What I liked was the long spiral twist these ones had ...

got the skinny back from crazy cow on shipping, $29.95 per horn + $45 shipping USD so with the minimum order of $50: $107 USD + exchange + tax ~ somewhere around $150 :(

dang.

Did you ever consider Highland cattle horns instead of the iconic longhorns? Here's a web site of Highland cattle producers and many sell horns.

Interesting thought on the longhorns.... I've been slowly getting motivated to do a tour of abattoirs for horns - did it several years back and got some decent hides, hoofs for glue and some horns (ended up giving them to a creative anachronism group to play with... seems they really do like their horns eh?).

the horn that I use came from a local slaughterhouse about 35 years ago. I cut a bit of the horn away near the base so that I could clamp the bony core in the vise, then gave a major twist and it popped off. Acting on the butchers advice, I let the horn rot for a couple of days before trying to remove the core

cheers mooncoon

When you have a dry cut-off horn just grab it by the point and tap it against a fence post or any non marring surface. A couple raps and the core will fly out like #### through a goose. We cut off miles of them on the farm before going to a predominately polled herd.
