Look at this crap from Marlin

Thanks for posting. I've always had a hankering for one of the 16-inch barreled guns, ideally in .44magnum. Then, everytime I start to believe the tales of QC being back up to snuff, I see a thread like this and #####-slap myself back to reality.

Supposedly if you can find 2017 manf, these issues are worked out. The couple xL ones seemed to be much better...
Oddly, I haven't seen any issues with the 1894s first hand since 2015. Makes me wonder if the 1895 and 336 are in the same production line.

Barrel code:
Any of the following: BLACKPOWDERX (months, Jan-Dec) + L (2017) or M (2018)
B - Jan, L - Feb, A - Mar ...etc.

Example: Barrel code (WL) = August2017

Its frustrating, since I really want a 1895SBL... but trying to find a unicorn right now is a PITA.

The wood in the picture does sit a tad proud on the right. Send it back if it bothers you of course. I tend not to worry too much about 'proud' fitting wood. It does look like the finisher was either lazy on the right or too aggressive on the left with their sanding!
More concerned about the metal to metal fit and overall metal finish. Like a lot of things in life now a days, ya gotta hand pick stuff. Sad but true. Marlins are great rifles if a) you can find one that is built right or b) you find one where you don't mind doing some touch up or refining yourself.

cheers,

My uncle recently got a 336y and the safety flew out of it, when I took the set screw out to replace the safety, the screw disintegrated.
The action is rougher than my rossi.

He likes the size of it, but I can't see to get the thing to shoot to my standards. Good enough for the 50yrd deer/bear gun he's using it for though.

Thanks for this info. I was seriously the 336Y for my wife and trying to find the time to head over to BP to check out one they have in stock.

I'm going to complete forget about the Remlins all together and stick to the Henry lever action.

*update*

I wound up at Reliable the other day in Vancouver looking at the new SBL.

This one was 2018 manf. - it was a perfect specimen. Fit and finish - excellent. Sights - Excellent, Cycling - excellent, wood - excellent.
Nice to see as this is a major improvement! Bear in mind, we are talking about a 1200$ rifle, it should be nice!

I really like my 45/70 SBL. I honestly can't find anything wrong with it, the fit and finish is excellent and it cycles beautifully. I have a JM marked 30/30 that I have owned since new and it actually cycles much rougher than the new Remlin. I guess your mileage may vary.

I've been really lucky with all my marlins....jm or rem. They all have excellent finish and good sights. Just need to put more rounds through them to smooth out the actions.

Mine is the same, I actually remarked to the guy behind the counter how nice it was and that I couldn’t find a thing wrong with it. I bought my SBL on the spot
