Look for the flatest shooting cailber for next build! HELP!!

Deer at 500m - mmm, a long hot for a clean kill - but, anyway, two cartridges I would recommend are .270 and 7mm RM. Both very traditional with easy availability of factory ammo, a wide variety of components for the reloader and factory chamberings from all manufacturers. Do rethink the 500m on a deer idea though - in windy conitions I've see F-Class shooters drop a bullet into the 3 or 2 ring and they are shooting match grade guns and ammo under controlled conditions.

X2 ... Glad to see someone speak up on this. Really hate seeing wounded deer from hunters shooting at overly long distances.
Not saying it cannot be done...just that not many hunters have developed the required skill set let alone the ethics.

My 7mm rum is built on a Barnard action. It's a custom chamber with 0.317 neck, a 32 inch straight tube 1.25 inches( trueflight) with a vais muzzle break. According to ballstic calculators it isn't suppose to be quite that flat but those are my actual point of impacts. I must be getting a higher actual B.C because of the speed( I think).

that makes sence with 32" barrel. since RUMS carry so much powder my stock 26" couldnt keep up. I am building one from rem 700 action with 30" barrel for 300RUM. hope it work great like yours!

7mm Rem Mag, 7mm STW, 7mm RUM, 7mm-338 Lapua, 7mm-50 BMG.

Rumor has it that the 7mm wildcat of the 20mm is flatter than a laser.

Someone did a .17-50 BMG/AI, what's stopping you? Let us know how it works out :jerkit:

Not a rifle one would want to carry for field work on deer I would imagine. ;)

What kind of shooting are you doing and to what distance.... we need more info to give any meaningful advice.

I'll second this opinion and offer my own "nothing shoots flatter, hits harder or is more accurate" than a Weatherby"

And add this for digestion,
"It was Roy Weatherby's opinion that the faster a bullet traveled, the better—the flatter it would shoot, the less it would drop, the harder it would hit—the better its terminal performance. It was a concept that would spawn many an argument among ballistics experts, gun writers and in many a deer camp. Those questions, concerns and doubts were quickly laid to rest. Soon, the entire hunting world would know what Roy had always believed — generate enough speed to create hydrostatic shock in the animal and the result will be more one-shot kills.

Ok, so if we can read between the advertising and marketing hoopla (myself I like purple Kool aide ;) ) and answer the questions of what one wants there are many fine choices and many variables of what Roy Weatherby said in the 1940's.
There has been much advancement in bullets today that are able to withstand the hyper sonic speed and the mega forces upon impact.
Enough said?
Tight Groups.
btw, my praise for Weatherby is slightly tongue in cheek, but Roy did raise some very good points and others have improved upon those points since his claim to fame.

223 with a 26 inches barrel 36 gr grenade, 4000 fps +... JP.

Not legal in most provinces and probably unethical for most shooters!

Im surprised there aren't any 6.5 cal suggestions. How about the 264 win mag. Or take Jordons suggestion and get a good scope and use a 30-06 for a 500yard shot.

For no good reason I'll suggest the 264WM or the 26Nossler; neither of which I have used but ones I'd like to try out.
The 6.5's seem to grab my fancy- I think it's because most people go for something other than a 6.5.
500 yards on a deer is way beyond any distance I've done but if the conditions and confidence was there maybe- lots of uncontrollable variables in play...
How much barrel life is really a huge factor as well- if your going to use it as a weekend plinker then disregard the above suggestion and go with a lighter cartridge; I like the 6.5x55 but there are lots of other great choices.

I will take accuracy and consistant drop over flat n fast any day....
No matter how they start out by 700 yards the fast ones are getting passed with the one that didnt start out as fast :)
Pick one and become good with it...and it will be all you need
