Lookin to replace my savage youth model 243 for a more dedicated yote gun.
caliber choices are 204, 223, 22-250.
-Used to own a 22-250 stevens m200 before i started reloading and found the gun a little light and didint like the muzzle jump when shooting cheap ammmo. though im not opposed to getting another stevens if handloading would solve the recoil problem.
-Been leaning towards the 204 cuz its the smallest and recoil would b minimal.
-Are realoading components any harder to find than the other cals.
-Would one cal have a significant advantage over the other.
Im a big fan of savage..... but begining to think that a rem sps varmint or tact might b my best option for the $.

ur thoughts?
 
I've used all three calibers, and hunted with people who use them as well.

.204 gets my vote through and through.

fast, flat shooting.

reloading components are easy to find now that the caliber is growing in popularity, it take a large number of powders, small rifle primers.

brass is easy to find, factory loaded shells are not that expensive either.

Don't let anyone tell you you need 40 gr to knock dogs down with the .204 as well. the 32 gr do just as good of a job at a distance.
 
I have used most of the common 22s ie hornet,222,223,22-250 & swift. I still ise the small 3 when calling. If I am field hunting where I will be shooting over 300yds I use a 243. I like the extra killing power. The 22-250 & the swift are very good killers out to 400. If I could have only 1 (God forbid), it would be 243 1st, 22-250 2nd, then swift. Depends on how far you shoot. I have killed them with 22rf and shotguns but not my 1st choice. Good luck.
 
A fast-twist .223 or .22-250 would be great. Short shots or long, you can run the bullets that get it done best. For even more fun and less trimming, AI either of them.
 
Are you planning on keeping the furs? If yes go with a 204. If not go with the 22-250. I have 2 of each of the calibers listed and my favorite for a dedicated yote gun is the 22-250. Lots of knockdown power as far out as i feel comfortable shooting but tends to leave big holes in the fur.
 
My vote is for the .204 as well. This winter was my first year with the caliber and as far as yote fur saving gun you can not get any better. I only had one exit all winter and that was my fault with a gut shot, and only had one get away and again my fault.. bad shot. I use handloaded 39gr sierras.
 
So far im still leaning towards the 204.
Ill be shooting between 100yds and whatever.....
basicaly lookin for somethin fast with little to no recoil
hammered a yote on the run @ 180 paces w my 17 hmr last night..
so i want somethin between the 17 and 243.
like to shoot one of the t/c ventures but the action felt kinda sloppy when i picked one up @ magnum
lookin @ maybe an sps or a heavy barreled savage.
 
I have owned and hunted coyotes with 204, 223, 22-250 and 243. The 223 is now dedicated coyote rifle. No recoil. No fur damage. Will drop a coyote out further than I need to worry about. Huge choice of ammo. Cheap ammo. Savage has some nice 223 options in the law enforcment and varmint models
 
I must be an odd (or is that "old"?) duck, because I stopped looking for a coyote cartridge many years ago when I discovered that a .222 Remington pushing a 40 grain Ballistic Tip at around 3550 fps kills 'em deader than dead without messing up the hides. I figured I would stay with that performance level until it eventually failed me and I moved on to something else. I'm still waiting for that first failure...

What's a .204? ;)
