Looking at a lighter Caliber Hunting rifle for my son

My 2 cents: I had a similar situation couple /few years back 15 year old son wondering if 30-06 was too much for him. I shot SST's out of my rifle as most accurate. What I did was buy a CZ 550 FS ( bit heavier with the full stock) and try 125 grain Hornady SST Custom Lite store-bought ammo. Worked great! He's been shooting it ever since and he's accurate out to 150 yards without a scope. Recoil is negligible and he's never complained and in a pinch hunting can give me ammo .

Do people still fill synthetic stocks with sand to soak up recoil, and give the upper body a free weight lifting workout ?

If you can only use factory ammo, I would go with a 7-08. The lighter bullets have less recoil. As he ages, he can use the heavier bullets and be well armed for anything.

I hand load, so when my son was 10 I cut down a target rifle and he shot 308 with 125 gr Sierras. Very accurate to 600 yards, by no farther.

If you handload, I suggest a 308 with milder loads under a 130 or 150 gr bullet.

7-08 is some of the priciest ammo on the shelf......if it's even available

that is not what the laws says but they recommend 30-06. found a 308 win factory load that meet that minimun ...

You’re right, my mistake, hard to find ammo in 308 with 180 bullets that offer 2800+ ft/lbs of energy! I guess you can reload for it!!

ha ha everyone who doesnt own the 6.5 hates them........... but in this instance, it seems right?

it gets my choice if the fella is younger, if he is just smaller - then loading any other cartridge at a min charge as opposed to wringing its neck out, will help......

my 708 ultralight is a min load , seems to be most accurate- but it doesnt snap around as it would with a hotter charge,..... there is something in that.

Everyone hates the 6.5 Creedmoor right?

I would start with finding which rifle platform fits him the best. May have to go and handle a few, lots of options out there. Everyone is different, but some reasonable quality options:

Winchester m70 featherweight
Tikka T3X
CZ
weatherby vanguard lineup

Lots of different stocks and configurations. As for cartridge, I would go with any of the above, 6.5 CM, .243, 708, 2506.
