Looking at a Savage Mk II

The accutrigger adds $100? I don't think retailers are selling non-accutrigger models for a hundred bucks.

The ones I looked at online ( I did a LOT of looking around!) seemed to be $250-$300 for Accutirgger ones, and I got mine for $189. There may be Accutirgger ones out there for only $20 more, but I couldn't find them. Don't get me wrong - if they are out there for a comparable price, it would definitely be worth getting the Accutrigger, IMHO. I just couldn't find one at a price I could manage, despite looking for a couple of months.

anybody got these savage mk 2's on sale right now?

Try Barton's Big Country (I know, not one of our sponsors, but...). That's where I got mine - smokin' deal, I thought. And the rifle is way better than I hoped it would be. It wasn't exactly as pictured (seems like all the retailers online just use pics from the Savage site, even if it's not the model they're selling), as the photo showed an Accutrigger. On the plus side, the scope that came on it was better than the one in the picture, so I didn't complain.

Lebaron is selling the wood accutrigger models for about $220(taxes included), and the plastic stocked slightly cheaper. That might be a good idea if you have a lebaron close by.

I have had an Mk. II for years now, my father bought it for me when I was young. I abused the **** out of it and it still shoots like a dream, cycles flawlessly and now that it has been left outside, scraped on trees, was dropped in gravel, dipped in blood and whatnot, looks pretty beat-up and bad ass like any useful rimfire should look.

There was no Accutrigger at the time so the new models are probably even better out of the box !

However, I will check out those trigger mods mentioned above...

In my opinion this rifle would be a better starting point:

Put on a reasonable scope like a Bushnell Banner 4-12 and you have a package you will be happy with for a long time. Yes, what I've described will cost you 50% more that the FV package but its still not a bad price and is worth the difference.

If I was starting from scratch with a Savage MKII... I would choose the FV-SR model... you get alot more for a few bucks... better bolt handle, one piece rail, 16" threaded heavy contour barrel... I have FVSS models, FV models and FV-SR models... the FV-SR pictured below is the best configuration and at $250 is a good deal;

So now I'm looking as 762Shooter suggested a Savage Mk II FV with a Bushnell Banner Dusk and Dawn 3-9x40 3" eye relief. Thoughts? What size rings would I need for the Bushnell 1"? And what type of bases come preinstalled on the FV Weaver style?

Got the plastic stick version for $210 tax included. Went to Williams and picked up extra 4 mags.

I'm a big fan of the Savage .22 rifles. The one I'm shooting now is the BV.

Same rifle with a better stock. Boyds is making their wood and I think their laminated stocks now. The BV has a high comb and lines up well with a scope. The only problem I've ever had with any MK II is the chamber gets sticky and cartridges skip off the extractor. I use a .22 brush on a short length of rod in a drill to clean the chambers. Other then that this BV shoots as good as any .22 I've ever owned, including a very accurate 452.

You would be way further ahead with a Mueller APV 4.5-14X40mm than any of the Bushnell Banner line... or spend a little more and get a Hawke Varmint with half mil-dot reticle.

Are these the Hawke scopes you speak of?

Would an adjustable objective be preferred for use with these 22lr's?

Actually I suggested the Banner 4-12. The reason I did is that this scope has an adjustable objective lens. Given that we typically shoot a .22 between 15 yards and 150 yards, if you don't have an adjustable objective lens you will have a lot of parallax error which will make good shooting difficult.

Other posters have recommended more expensive scopes. While its true that you get what you pay for, there is also the law of diminishing returns. The original poster was looking for an economical starter gun so I recommended the least expensive scope that I felt was worth having.

Thanks 762Shooter, that's exactly my intentions, get a nice inexpensive starter gun, learn the ropes of the precision game and eventually move up to a .308, where I plan on investing more of the green.

Out of curiosity, where can you find the Muellers in Canada? I searched and found White Falls, any where else?

Right now the Banner 4-12 with AO is in the running. Just need to find the rings to go with it.

Yes, those are the scopes I was suggesting... scroll down to the Varmint models with the side focus and 1/2 mil-dot reticles... nicest reticle that I have ever used for rimfire.

The Mueller APV can be had for approximately the same price as the Banner 4-12 AO and it is a nicer scope... I have used both, so have a direct comparison.

If you are interested in the Mueller APV, PM me and I will get you purchase info.
