I was thinking of an Outback too, until I shouldered one, worst sights of any gun out there. A pickle fork would be better than what they used lol. I wish they just stuck to the standard rib and bead.

Personally, I wouldn't consider anything under 26" barrel for hunting (or for anything, other than bear or home defence).
A decent used gun would be better than the subject gun. Or, if you don't feel confident with evaluating used guns and want a warrantee, something like the following offer from one of the site sponsors:

Ive seen in some CAS matches people with REALLY short coach guns unable to knock down heavy poppers because the pattern opens up too fast.

Both the outback and pale rider comes with 5 different chokes. 12" is more a defense thing to me. 20 will balance a little nicer and reach out a little more but still short enough on a quad or jump out of the truck for chickens. Nickel good for rain, boating.

I've owned most of the short O/U options out there, including the Stoeger double defense which looks the same as the one the OP is considering except it's painted scary black. I liked the single trigger but didn't like the auto-safety.
My favorite of all of them though hands down is the Mossberg HS12. Synthetic stock might not be as pretty, but it doesn't get moldy, and it almost puts itself together, literally. I've owned 2 and they assemble like no other I've owned. The sights are awesome, fiber optic front and receiver rail rear.
My only complaint is the stupid "toe safety," a small pendulum that blocks the trigger when the gun is pointed below a certain angle, which renders it useless if you're up a tree and a grumpy moose cow is beneath you. It's an easy fix with super glue, but man is it stupid for a gun marked for home defense.
They come up on the EE for as low as $300, can't recommend it enough.

For everyone, including the shooter. Ever try hunting with hearing protection on?
Couldn't agree more with this assessment.
I find anything from 16"-20"ish is good as a tromping through the thick trees, throw in the truck, on the ATV, etc general purpose hunting shotgun for mostly stationary targets. I like to use a 16" 20ga turkish Ricol for rabbits after deer season. I know i'm likely not going to hit a fast flushing grouse with it, but i'm not likely to hit a fast flushing grouse with a 28" long shotgun either, so for me the ease of carrying makes up for the lack of wingshooting for what i use it for. If i could find it in an 18" barrel i think that would be about perfect, but it's what i have, so i stick with it.
As long as you've got the interchangeable chokes you're good to go, just pattern it before you head out.
One last note, Dilly and Straightshooter are 100% correct, the shorter barrels are loud, i have started using some surefire sonic defenders and have them half way in so i can still hear pretty decently, but they're in place and easy to pop in quick if i need to. If on the chance a snap shot comes up, having them halfway in is just enough to not have my ears ring for the next day or two.
OH, FYI, that auto safety feature is a simple mod to get rid off
