Looking at buying a 1911.

Looking at purchasing a 1911 .45. Budget is around $1300. Looking for some feedback from members/owners as to what they think. Kimber vs Colt. The Sig 1911 match elite stainless caught my eye. Thanks!
 
The Sigs are nice but the non traditional lines of the slide put me off. Check out S&W 1911's as well. The look of them is crisp and clean and I feel that it makes Kimber look second class. They use an external extractor though which puts me off a little as I prefer the more traditional internal extractor. But the look and fit of the rest of the gun really makes me willing to overlook the external extractor.

Another brand you should look at is STI. The Trojan and Ranger II models are in that price range. But they are more of a parkerized finish so if you're looking for stainless they may not turn your crank.

At this point I'm just waiting for the Ruger 1911's to show up before I decide on which way to go for my own new 1911.

I can't say much about a true blue Colt since I've only seen a couple of used ones here and there. And the ones I have seen were built to the somewhat more loose fitting "military" standards. The other brands seem to manage to make the frame to slide and barrel bushings fit to a tighter standard which I like. But if you come across a true Colt then it would be worth checking it out.
 
Have you considered the Norinco 1911? Save 800$, and maybe plan to spend a bit on upgrades/mods.
 
One of the great things about the 1911 is that it has become a true platofrm, not just a gun. These days, 1911s come in various flavours and configurations so they can be pretty much tailored to either a specific use, such as combat/defensive, competition, target shooting, etc., oe just a general all purpose gun.

The price range that you are looking has a lot of variety for 1911s... What kind of shooting do you plan to use it for?

If it's just a general all-around'er that you are after, I's say buy yourself a Ruger SR1911 for about $720 and spend the rest on ammo. I would only spend more if I was looking for something specific, such as a railed 1911 or something competition specific... Just my 2 cents worth.
 
Nighthawk or Wilson combat pistols make the nicest 1911s IMO... But if you don't have the funds, Para ordnance has some nice ones, there an Afghanistan model on EE
 
For your budget and out of the box, Colt is the best choice. You could also have a nice project gun built out of a Norinco. If you don't mind something non-traditional, the S&W E-Series looks promising.

Kimber and SIG are the two gun companies that Ron Cohen has managed to ruin. Para Ordnance is even worse.

If I was looking to spend 1300 for a 4acp and I do not reload yet, I'd look at the Ruger SR1911, a Lee Classic Turret Kit/Dies, and reloading components.

Or if a Norinco Sport 1911 suits your taste, even better for you can buy more reloading components with what's leftover from your 1300.....of course, if you are loaded, then you can just up the ante and forget about reloading. Buy a Kimber, Colt or STI something and factory ammo.

My guess is you have never fired a nighthawk or wilson combat if your next recommendation is a para...especially the "special edition" garbage they put out!

Not far off the OPs price range is a Dan Wesson Valour on the EE for 1650 which is a great buy.
 
I don't currently do any reloading. Strongly thinking about starting. I'm liking the Ruger SR1911 but from what I understand not a single one had been shipped to a Canadian dealer since being announced back in April 2011. Long waiting lists. Might be worth the wait.

Springfield is a very good brand for the price. I have a kimber and it shoots good but the finish is something to be desired. If I could do it over, I would get a Springfield and use the money left over to buy brass, and projectiles, or maybe a Colt. You are lucky to have a budget like that, I wish I had it.
 
Given that you'll spend more on ammo than you will on the gun in a very short time, it makes sense to get a reasonable gun and a reloading set up - in the long run if you want to shoot, that's the way to go. If you want a piece of "Man Jewellery" and you can handle going to the range once a month with 50 rounds, buy a flashy gun - either way don't waste your money on a gun that's all flash and no guts (Para). You won't be happy. Take a look at the STI Spartan, and the new Ruger (if you can find one) and a good basic four station reloading set up - a Lee Turret is an excellent place to start. Forget whoever suggested Wilson - they START at $3500, and go up from there - there's no point in being a lousy shot with a first class firearm. Incidently, building, maintaining or improving a level of skill takes more time and ammo with a 45 than it does with a 9mm - there's no way around that.

PS - Sig 1911's don't fit into 1911 holsters.
