Hey

I am looking at buying a bolt action rifle of a larger caliber.
I already have a 22lr and a 12 gauge.

I am looking for something that will take down big game (grizzly, elk, moose) and a caliber that has ammo that is more easily available than others. I realize in a sh1t hits the fan scenario, everyone will be buying up ammo, but just curious if there is any certain caliber that would be best to buy??

Thanks in advance for any help!!

Well, I can't really address your SHTF requirements, as that is a very individual and somewhat "fluid" endeavour.
So far as a popular, versatile, relatively inexpensive cartridge for a bolt action rifle - the 30.06 is pretty good. It can be had with 150 gn bullets, for the lighter game and somewhat over 200 gn, for heavier/thicker skinned animals - and other weights in between. The cartridge has been made for over 100 years and is still made by every major ammo company - in numerous weights and bullet types. Certainly not the "hardest hitter" - for that, you have to start looking at larger caliber and magnum offerings - but as a round that will do the job and should be quite plentiful, for not a lot of $ - it is my pick.

I agree with the above. Something in 30-06 or .308 would do just fine.
Or an Enfield that’s in decent shape. They last a long time plus I don’t think I’ve ever seen a gun shop not carry .303Brit

You're looking at hunting grizzlies when SHTF? How many grizzlies exactly do you think are out there lol? Or you're going to be taking your pickup up north when SHTF in search of fertile hunting grounds? Hopefully you already have the extra jerry cans & gas. You may want to think this through a little more.

I bought a 458 Lott and 100 factory ammo to replace my prohibited big caliber rifle, This is really powerfull.

Just get a 308 the ammo is plentiful there is bulk surplus available and it can be used on everything from coyotes to moose. you can get 110gr to 180gr ammo and a lot of rifles use detachable magazines you can have 10 round magazines. Ruger scout or similar are perfect rifles for the scenario your talking about.

Depends what you have in mind...
- Trying to mimic Burt Gummer?

I recommend .308. It is the most plentiful "Full Power" caliber. The ballistics are almost identical to 30-06, factory loads are almost the exact same price. The only real difference is it is a short action caliber (allowing for shorter receivers which equals lighter; by just a little bit), and you can find surplus 7.62NATO ammo for lower cost.

Try to find a rifle that is known to work well with both .308 and 7.62NATO. My Savage 99C in .308 tends to have a failure to eject malfunction after around 15 rounds when using 7.62NATO.

It's funny to think that back then we all thought "Wow, that's a lot of guns!". Now most of us have collections that rival that one.

IMO a SHTF scenario requires either a 556 or 308 rifle. There is far more ammo for those two calibers than any other options, how many people do you know buying 1000rd cases of 30-06?

.45-70, because it's the only "government" I'd ever trust.
It'll take bush chickens with .457 round balls over 8 grains of Trail Boss, all the way up to head shotting a T-Rex via its arse with 500+ grain hard cast suppositories.

Your reply isn't helpful at all. I didn't hear any mention of a good gun/calibre to get.

All you did was make yourself sound like a total dink.
