Seeing as I have been blowing the grocery budget on handguns the last year:rolleyes: I have a limited amount of funds available to buy a rifle for benchrest.
Seeing as there is a multitude of offerings in my desired caliber, either a .223 or a .308, I'd like to know what people think would be a good starter rifle from Savage and what they think of the Remington 700 SPS varmint. The Remington looks good for the money, about $630.
Please don't point me to the megabuck rifles, I just can't swing that money.
Thanks for your time,
Glen

Benchrest and an sps tactical dont exactly go too well together. Savage 12br in 6mbr is a good starter rifle. The stock is made to ride the bags, its chambered in a very easy to tune cartridge and if you don't like the factory barrel, you can swap it out with simple tools and screw on a pre-fit match barrel.

Nobody talk much about those FNH rifle but this 223 with a Nikon 3X12X44 BDC 600 is quite a shooter out of the box, the complete rig brand new is just south of 1600.00, not that expensive for such an accurate rig, only shooted it with commercial UMC 55 gr and, this is good... JP.

Do realize that benchrest is mostly shot with a 6 ppc out to 300yds it is pretty much unbeatable and dominates short range benchrest.

Most benchrest rifles are now built on custom actions but a lot have been built in the past on commercial actions .
You haven't said how far you want to shoot but I assume you are talking short range benchrest , if you mean long range bench well that would be another story , a few more details from you would be good.

If you are serious about building a bench gun build it in 6 ppc if you want to buy a rig take Clatartar's advice.

If you want to be competitive I'd get a used BR gun that's all setup for the game. I wouldn't even try to buildup a Rem 700 for that. You need a purpose built gun with a stock meant to ride the bags, good front rest, flags, etc.

The 6ppc did dominate for many years but its second dog now in Benchrest score shooting 30br is not on top

Manitou I agree the 30 br does very well in score shooting due to the larger diameter bullet but for group shooting I think the 6 ppc is still king .

When I think of benchrest I automatically picture shooting for group size and aggs rather than score , maybe the OP can give us a bit more info on what kind of bench game he has in mind.

There's the rifle and then there's the scope to boot. I bought the Remington 700 SPS varmint for $630.00 at Cabela's because as most know, it's a great starter rifle. The scope was a little harder to figure out because if you go cheap, there is nothing you can do to modify it into something better. I shopped all over the place and found a Sightron 111 6-24x50 with the long range dot for just over $900.00 delivered to my door. Now, I know the stock on this rifle is just not up to snuff for benchrest, so that is the next upgrade for the rifle I ultimately want. I'll go $1000.00 for the stock at the highest end but it's not going to happen before the range opens up again. Planning and saving is the only way to go. Patience is the hard part.

Good luck amigo!

Savage 6br. Lapua makes ammo so you won't have to reload (another 500 bucks to set up). After 2500 shots down the tube just screw on another barrel.I'll even buy your used brass and that would pay for the barrel.:D
The sps if you realy want it to shoot will cost 400 or so for the smiths work just to straighten out the action, plus the cost of a barrel.

when you say, looking for a "benchrest" rifle did you just mean shooting paper from a bench casually

or

shooting short range or long range benchrest competitively

you might get more helpful advice if you tell us more about what you want the rifle to do

First you need to work out what you want to do with the rifle. Are you looking to actually build a BR rifle? Are you more interested in building a long-range precision/tactical style rifle? You mentionned 223 or 308, which sounds like you either want to shoot F/TR or you're looking more at the tactical style rifles.

You can start by reading this article http://www.longrangehunting.com/articles/long-range-rig.php. It's a good read and covers how to build a precision rig on a tight budget. Good luck.

Thanks for all the input folks. I will get out next week to Winnipeg and look at a few options.
As for the type of shooting I will be doing = 100 metre benchrest. I am considering the .223 in varmint category because I already own an AR and I can use the same ammo to plink with.
If I can't find something I like then I will go .308. If I had the money I would go with a BR round, but unfortunately I still have bills, kids etc.
Thanks again for the help,
Glen

Yes, I am a member and I am also on the board. I try to do my bit to support all the divisions of the club even though I am primarily with the handgun division. I shoot trap occasionally but have not tried the benchrest discipline. That's why I am looking at an entry level rifle. I have had the opportunity to try a few members specialty rigs and if I won the lottery I will get set up accordingly. Until then I will just have to make do.

Good to hear Snake. Then i take it you must have tried out one of the followings rifles?

DC, GW, or PN????

Hope to see them in a couple of weekends at Selkirk.

Myself, i would go the 223 route. Just so much easier on the shoulder.
