Hey fellas,

As the title states I'm looking for an inexpensive 9mm. My wife and daughter expressed interest in learning how to shoot.

I'm not a big handgun guy so one is enough but I want something that will not turn them off of shooting. CanAm has the Norinco np22 back in stock for $389 and my LGS has the Smith and Wesson SD9VE for $375.

Thoughts and opinions appreciated.

Thanks.

Take a look at the Ruger SR9 and the Canik pistol. The downside is the Canik mags are hard to find and can be pricey.
The S&W SD9 is an improvement over their SIGMA line but still not as good as the M&P.

If your only choices are the 2 you listed, I would pick S&W over Norc anyday.

I have shot a SR9 before, they do handle and shoot pretty nice. I can imagine it will suit the OP's need very well.

On a related note to the OP. I hear a lot of people (the ones I've spoken to anyways) talk up the M&P over the SD9VE largely because of its better trigger. Thing is I see a lot of Apex kits going into M&P's so I can't help but wonder if people might not be better just getting the SD9 to start with.

I see a fair number of MP's selling for $500-$550 on the EE. I'd save up for a little longer and buy a lightly used one.

Save yourself the tax and get something you'll be happy with long term.

I'd vote for the canik tp9sa...it's a very fine pistol...mags are readily available at blue wolf..I'm loving mine...it feels much more expensive than it is...

I have an SD9Ve and I would not recommend it.
It is not a pleasure to shoot.
I have even installed the Apex trigger kits and to me it still feels cheap.
Get them something with an excellent trigger that they will enjoy firing.
Maybe even a .22 so they can put more rounds downrange with less recoil.

I just picked up an "as new" Girsan Compact which is reported to be an excellent pistol in 9MM. The Girsan Fs gun sells slightly used for $500ish. Both are reported on favorably by those who own them. I would go that route if funds are tight. The FS is a carbon copy of the US Army's chosen pistol. The Turks have been making guns long before this country was started.

Take Care

Why not let your wife and daughter pick the gun. Then they are invested in the decision and maybe they'll be more interested in shooting.

I would echo this. Maybe make a list of what is in your price range and then go to a store where she can see or hold them and let her pick.

Another reasonably priced pistol I would add in on top of what the others have mentioned would be a Star Model B Super, for the price they're hard to beat.

I would also recommend looking at the FNH FNS9ls, both I and my wife own one and I cannot say enough good things about them, fantastic, well built , and accurate as can be.
I notice you are in Pitt Meadows, so I will put out the offer we were given when we started out with handguns, if you ever want to meet us on a Saturday at Abbottsford Fish and Game, your wife and daughter are welcome to try out our 9mm and also our .22 pistols to see if they like them. Always nice to try something out first, and if it brings more shooters into the club that's even better!
All the best
Edgy

It is a great suggestion to involve a significant other in the decision making process. I started with rentals because my wife invoked a 'no gun at home' policy. I had to run a comparison of different options (rental, .22lr only, 9mm only, mixed) and show great savings vs. the 'rental only' model. We agreed to proceed with the purchase. Picking the gun (the make, model and the look) was a great fun on the Sat evening with a bottle of red wine. I ran her choices by the folks at the range, and have to admit she has identified better choices than I would have done.

Wow, I pity you, man! I couldn't live with such a rule. I think I would invoke a "no shoes at home" rule on her. ;)

If you dont straightened up your wife up front, you will be forced to obey rules like that, what concern my wife it's her prerogative, what are my business is my prerogative, the faster you put order in that situation will see you and you wife just be in peace with any possible disagrement... JP.
