looking at getting a .22 hand gun... I want the Sig mosquito.

Hello all I am looking at getting a Sig Mosquito, but when I mentioned this at my club I got mixed feedback... most saying that it is a piece of crap. I would like to get some feedback from somebody who owns the gun. for the most part I'm hearing bad things from people who have just "heard" bad things about it.

It's a "piece of crap" to those who put cheap bulk ammo through it (it doesn't function properly). Me and a buddy tried many different brands of ammo, and the CCI mini mags functioned flawlessly.

That gun is great fun. Cheap to shoot, no recoil (great for practising rapid fire drills), and everyone can use it. I think its a great buy.
 
The one I shot was jamomatic even with cci mini-mags...if it was $399 might still be worth it IMO but I wouldn't pay $550+ for one
 
Most of us started with .22 as a first gun therefore we always pay attention to any new breed of rimfire guns. I have talked to a sale person in a gunstore and he said" what do you think it need two recoil springs for different ammos while the other guns don't need?" They have this gun in there store too.

I'm guessing that the main reason why people are attracted to the mMsquito is the fact that it looks like a "normal" modern centerfire pistol while most popular .22s look like Startrek props, tree branches or Luger's ugly siblings. But there's a good reason why these proven and successful designs look that way. Building a .22 that works reliably with a full-size slide is no easy task and one to which Sig apparently wasn't up to.

The Mosquito is o.k. It's pretty fun, and decently reliable with good ammo. Forget all the hype and just buy a Mosquito if you want one. It's only $500 anyway. Use the longer spring and CCI Minimags and it will work just fine. Use crap ammo and you get some failures here and there. Big deal.

My girlfriend has a Ruger 22/45 and a conversion kit for a Beretta as well as the two .22LR guns of mine in the above thread. I've shot them all a ton - particularly the P22 (approx. 25,000 rounds - sometimes as much as 500+ in an afternoon). Between the four of them the Ciener Beretta conversion kit is probably the best overall, but you need a Beretta to make it work obviously. The GLOCK conversion kits and other kits are good too. Consider gettiing one of those if you have a common centre-fire pistol. The Ruger is quite accurate but I find the "fun" factor to be lacking with it.

The odd failure is inevitable with most rimfire ammo anyway. Just last weekend I had 3 or 4 Yellowjackets out of 50 that were struck hard but didn't go anywhere. Bad batch maybe but's that's rimfire for you. I've never figured out why people demand centre-fire reliability of their rimfire guns. So you get a FTF or FTE once in awhile. Who cares? It's not as if you are "trusting your life" to the gun or any of that gun magazine b.s.

Nothing wrong with owning a SIG Mosquito. But as a first gun it has it's limitations. If you plan to learn how to shoot (training your body and your mind) then there are better choices. If you want to just blast off ammo and have a lot of fun then its great.

Well said! I personal really like the look of this gun and look forward they have a newer generation which solved the jam problem.

They named the gun appropriately........... Mosquito's are annoying.

You are better off to get a reliable Browning or Ruger 22 ,and when you are ready get yourself a nice looking 9mm or similar calibre.
 
I have a Colt 1911, so it's not my first gun... I just want a .22 because it's cheap to shoot..... anyways I'm giving up on it (mosquito), I'm not looking for a "problem" gun, now I'm considering the Browning Buckmark or the CZ Kadet.... I don't really know if I can justify spending 750 bucks on a .22

I would like some Info on the CZ Kadet...
 
I got my Browning Buckmark Stainless for $350 brand new in July at Shooters Choice Waterloo Ont.

The CZ is the expensive one at 750 bucks... I like the Browning Buckmark plus, that runs about 500 out the door.

The gun shop in my area also has the Browning Camper that runs about 400 out the door.

The CZ is expensive (well really expensive when you consider that it is a .22) but it has the look, feel and weight of a "real" handgun.

I held the ruger 22/45 and I SEE that is has the 45 grip... but lets be honest it feels Nothing like a 45 in your hand.... way to thin and light.

The buckmark has a nicer grip... feels more like a "real" gun
 
Sig Mosquito

I'm not familiar with the SIG, but from my own experience of a first .22 semi auto I'd REALLY recommend the Walther P22. I find it a little beauty, takes any kind of ammo, never fails to fire, and has impressed the heck out of quite a few of my friends whith a lot more experience than me. It comes with a barrel mounted weight that improves accuracy, and with a couple of alternate hand grip sizes. Also it is small enough to be fired by anyone - my wife enjoys it no end. It is easy to strip and clean too. Nicely made weapon.
