I was doing some new test loads for a rifle last night and had out all the usual measuring equipment. So I am looking at my Hornady comparator and wondering if this comparator can only be used in reference to itself or are all the comparators going to measure the same (i.e. the 22 cal insert is cut the same between brands), Just thinking this when possibly someone is using your data as reference base line to measure length or even if you had to replace your unit.

Anybody ever put thought into that?

I would assume for best comparisons that you would use the same insert and tool each time.

You are right about that, excuses are not reasons if the tool you use go south, you know your instinct will always take you out of troubles... JP.

Kelly you are correct. There are no standard dimensions for comparators, therefore the readings from different comparators are not, ummm, comparable (sorry!). The numbers you get from a comparator are a nice precise number though, quite useful for your own measurements and notes.
