Looking at old shotguns on Trade-Ex

I've decided to get an old side by side shotgun. Its going to be a bit of a project; I'm looking for something I can clean up, restore a bit, and hopefully take pheasant hunting. I'd love an old H&H, but let's face it - I'm far too cheap.

Trade-Ex seems to have a large selection of shotguns, by my knowledge of these firearms is very limited. All I know is that I'm looking for something in 12 ga that can handle modern loads (not the 'magnum' stuff). I know this means no damascus barrels, and to avoid the 2.5 in chambers. I'm really hung up on what model to get. External hammers vs 'hammerless' - which is better? Certain models to avoid?

Right now I'm afraid that ordering a shotgun will end me up with something that I can't shoot unless I handload some black powder rounds. I like the lines of the Sauer and Sons models.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Some of them are great, cheap shooters. I got a Belgian hammerless sxs from them, shoots light loads shells all day, shooting at clay pigeon. Tony and Anthony are great guys to deal with, ask them any question and they will answer.
