Hey guys I'm looking a picking up a cz 858, 19" _ folder, non- res.

anything I should be aware of??
pros/cons?
i was also considering a sks but the cz felt better to me although the store only had a fixed stock 858 so....

the goal for this gun is cheap ammo, less expensive platform to buy just to get started in three gun type shooting

yep, cant go wrong with an 858. 2 lbs lighter and several inches shorter than SKS, better balanced, better detachable mags (and 4 included with rifle), little bit better iron sights, little more accurate and most aftermarket parts are good quality compared to most SKS parts being cheap junk. Youre getting an all around better gun for the money. Not that the SKS is bad, its a fantastic rifle but the 858 improves on it in every way.
 
I bought both. A Norinco SKS and an 858. I have also added a Russian SKS to the collection.

I love my SKS's, but I do think the 858 is a better rifle. It's much more ergonomic, lighter and cooler looking. It's also much easier to strip. If you're recoil shy, maybe go for a $199 Norinco SKS first, the extra weight of the rifle really makes the recoil negligible. If not, the 858 is a great buy. The 858 doesn't kick very much, but it's certainly sharper than an SKS.

In a perfect world, I'd say get both. Makes for a hell of a fun day at the range.
 
I have two SKSs and two 858s. The SKSs are fun but the 858s get way more range time. I have found it is easier to find really solid aftermarket stuff like picatinny rail handguards. Everything I have seen for the SKS seems to be junk except for maybe the stocks.

The "pimped out" one now has a Magpul AFG. I love the Angled Foregrip on this rifle because it doesn't get in the way when you rock the mag forward to remove it or insert a new one. The only original piece on I can't stand is the pistol grip. It's too small and it looks weird.
 
there is a non res folder on the EE for $600 right now. Cant go wrong, esp when you are looking at ~$200 for an sks
 
buy the CZ first, then go for an SKS if you want some nostalgia. Thats what I did, and I guarantee you my CZ will have more range time then my SKS. I really only got a Russian SKS so that I could say I have a Russian SKS.
 
I didn't like my buddy's folder for 2 reasons.

1. Length of pull is too short, I'm a big guy.
2. The hinge for the folder is on the right side, I'm a lefty. See #1.

Something to think about!

I'm 6'4. The Length of pull is a bit short on the wood stock too. I think if you're a bigger guy you'll find both the SKS and the 858 to be a bit on the short side, but for the SKS is worst. I may actually get a recoil pad for my SKS just to give me some more LOP.

That said, I still shoot the 858 pretty well considering. After a dozen or so mags anyone can shoot it well, the learning curve isn't exactly what I would call steep.

As for lefties, my Buddy is a lefty and he says my 858 isn't very uncomfortable and he never got any brass in the face while shooting. It ejects forward and right with good consistency. This is with the fixed stock though, I don't imagine the folder is very comfortable for a leftie.

I like getting a firm cheek weld, which is awkward with the folder to begin with. Add getting the hinge in the teeth when not keeping my distance pretty much killed the whole CZ thing for me. I think I'd like to try one with the wooden stock though.
