looking at picking up a CZ 858, advise.**update

I have two SKSs and two 858s. The SKSs are fun but the 858s get way more range time. I have found it is easier to find really solid aftermarket stuff like picatinny rail handguards. Everything I have seen for the SKS seems to be junk except for maybe the stocks.

The "pimped out" one now has a Magpul AFG. I love the Angled Foregrip on this rifle because it doesn't get in the way when you rock the mag forward to remove it or insert a new one. The only original piece on I can't stand is the pistol grip. It's too small and it looks weird.

I can see why it is tough to get 762x39 ammo, you have it all:eek::D

^^^ b files...Lefty! ...works fine for him...myself ...righty...love the whole platform of these rifles

Yes I am a lefty, never had any problems working the folder or getting the hinge in my teeth.

Being a lefty is actually pretty good for me. Easy to work the selector and charging handle. No brass kisses on my cheek either. LOVE THE CZ 858 PLATFORM!!!!!!!!;)

got the call from wolverine just minutes ago and it looks like the shipment has arrived and I'll be a proud new owner of a cz 858 this weekend!!!!!!

Congrats :D

Look for Czech surplus ammo, as that is the only 762x39 I've found on stripper clips. I'm pretty sure Wanstall's has the Czech surplus ammo, but also check out Trade-Ex (free shipping), Marstar, Westrifle and Budget Shooter Supply. They're all board sponsors at the top of the page.

x39 PIMP!

ok so I picked up the CZ yesterday with a couple of cases of ammo, and all is great!

one question what the hell is item "G" in the cleaning kit the "front sight wrench" used for other then for pushing out pins on main frame and locking in the cleaning rod to the oil can handle???

for the life of me I can't see how this could be used for the front sight in any way at all???

Absolutely ZERO regrets from getting one... every Canadian firearms owner should have one!!! :D:rockOn::D

Agreed! :D
I have an AR, Poly M305 and Yogo SKS, but my SA VZ-58 is a lot lighter and well built. I haven't shot mine yet, just come in BNIB last Fri. :) But I've already liked it so much, it'll be my go gun as non-restricted status.

some came slotted to turn the FSP but not all. You can use a small file or what have you to modify it. It also compresses the rear sight spring to remove the rear sight, is used to depress the extractor plunger to remove it and the FP, used for scraping carbon and can help pop pins out.

update

went shooting yesterday, all I can say is FUN GUN!.

shot it with the standard folding stock and was expecting "face pain" but to my surprise this was not the case, this rifle hardly recoils. then change out the stock to a fab defense collapsible it was good as well. Although I do like the compactness of a folder.

my only issue is that I like to put my hand forward on the hand guard and this is pretty much where the gas vent is. I've been looking through the cz-858 thread for pics of anyone who has a longer hand guard in this area and am at like page 110 and haven’t seen any yet so perhaps they don't exist in the aftermarket world and if not I'll likely have to make something

one thing I did before taking out the gun was make up a quick little mag release shoe that slides over the existing lever and allows you to release the mag with your trigger finger. I'm glad i did as I like it , it seems to work quiet well and i still have access to the bolt catch, now I just need to devise something that will allow me to release the catch without having to hit the bolt or i suppose I could just drill and tap the bolt carrier for an ambi bolt handle so i don't have to reach over the bolt to release the catch.

As for accuracy well it could always be better, I will need to adjust my sight though any suggestions as to who carries the front sight tool in CND. Thanks.

Maintain it properly, clean it every time and you'll never have problems. The only malfunction I've ever had was a stove pipe due to the primer coming out of the primer pocket and jamming the following round going in. S&B, 123gr SP, brass case

ya it's very good so far, we shot alot and had no stoppages at all. got home hosed it down with hot water and scrub brush , patch and oil. 15min max all done

It shot high, lets be serious... hahaha

One thing with the Fab Defense, I had to pull in the stock to get rid of the stock creep every shot, but it mitigated what little recoil there was.

the fab defense lower HG wraps around the HG ferrule and protects your hand form the heat, but the downside is the vents in the side still dump all that gas on your hand. Its not hot but it turns your hand black. A vertical foregrip is a good solution for this but you will have to go with something short to clear the mags when you change them.
