I'm looking at buying a .22 pistol and joining the local range. I've got a little cash coming (not much) and I had a look at the used handguns today at a local retailer. He had 3 that caught my interest, a GSG 1911, but it had alot of miles on it. The barrel and the slide aren't even close to inline, I don't know if this is common or not, it must shoot way off to the right. The price was good, and I could probably afford to tune it up to what I'd want. There is also an Astra TS-22, never heard of them, nice shape though, adjustable sights and a target style grip, most expensive of the 3. They also have a Smith and Wesson 22-A, which is in the middle price wise, but seems like the best buy, very nice shape. Anyone have any opinions on these 3? I think I'll go with the Smith myself.

Thanks!

Down the line you may want to get more magazines or other internal parts if any break or wear. For that reason the S&W makes a lot more sense.

Later, when you've got a few others, if you find something unique for whatever reason THEN buy it. That way you're not dead in the water if something breaks or you find you want to use it for any sort of competition that requires extra magazines which are just shy of impossible to find.

It's hard to imagine a GSG being worn to that extent and not sound like a maraca when shaken. But if it's worn to the extent you are suggesting then I agree that it's good to pass on it.

Finding parts for an Astra can be a real challenge. You might want to avoid that as your first/main gun.

If the GSG looks high millage, stay away. If you're on a limited budget and looking for a shooter, not a winter project, it's probably not worth the effort.

The Smith is probably your best option of those 3. Jan/Fed. are buyers months. Christmas bills come in, people clean out old stuff they're just not using. Check EE for Ruger MK 1's and 2's, Browning Buckmarks, and the banner dealers up top. Lots of nice deals to be had lately.

gl finding ammo.

you can get the GSG/Sig 1911 for $400 brand new.
while i have one and really like it i would never recommend anyone pick one up used.
they just dont look like they are a gun that would last a long time.

honestly if your looking to buy a used 22 i would only really look at a ruger or a buckmark.
anything other then that is either going to be a lot more money or not worth the money.

out of the 3 you listed the S&W is what i would do.
ive got 2 S&W 22's and have had them for...... 20 years? both are flawless.
granted they arn't the 22-A, mine are the predacesor the 422 and 622 but basically the same.

I agree that the Smith is the only "Real" choice out of the 3 of them...What is your budget. If we knew I am sure a few more suggestion's would come up..

Hi there
I have a 1911 in .22, Chiappa Brand. It functions great, I shot a box or two with CCI, 100% function.

I'm looking around $400-450. The 3 I mentioned are local and I got to paw them before handing over any cash. I prefer to get my hands on them first, so most internet sales are tough unless I can find one similar around here (saved me from buying a Mossberg 715, true story...)

Astras have always been considered cheap import guns. Lots of uncertainty with durability, reliability and spare parts.

GSG guns sure look like fun, but they are a recent entrant to the market, don't know how they will stand up in the long term or how long the company will be supplying parts.

Smith & Wesson .22 semiautos have the worst reputation of any .22 pistol aside from the Sig Mosquito. I think it was the 2204 and 2206 in particular that made them infamous, not too sure about the 22-A.

For $400+ there is no excuse not to look at the Rugers or a Browning Buckmark. You won't find one for $250, like some suggested here, but it's not too hard to find one for $350.
