Iam sure this has been asked more than once. But being at work iam on my antique blackberry, so the search function is even more useless than normal. But iam looking for a review on the 18.5" norc m14 that canam offers. Main thing being reliability as I want to use it as a bush gun. Am I way out to lunch even considering this rifle for such a thing? The main attraction being the short barrel and chambered in .308. Iam not to fond of the ruger scout rifle. So my options are limited.

I don't have any first hand experience as I only just got my rifle yesterday and haven't taken it out to shoot yet. However, I did do a bunch of research with similar points in mind as you have.

Basically what I have found is that for the price you can't go wrong getting one (or even two). There seems to be a little inconsistency from rifle to rifle but generally they are fairly accurate - more so than people would think for that price, (keep in mind you can always upgrade certain parts to enhance performance further) and durable - add to that the low cost of the gun and you have yourself a decent bush gun you won't be too afraid to put a ding or two in when wandering around.

I'm sure others with first hand experience will chime in as well.

I just tested my 18.5" M14 yesterday and it ran flawlessly! The first group I shot was at 25m just to see if the factory sights were zeroed and I managed to get 5 shots in a 2.5" group. That's on a snowy mountain with norc ammo and shooting off a wobbly folding table with no bags/rests. I'm positive I could've got it under 2" if I at least had a chair and a sandbag to rest the rifle on. At 50m I could shoot clays standing and completely unsupported. I only put about 100 rounds through "Emma" and so far I'm impressed. Cleaning was a breeze as everything came apart effortlessly.

I love my shorty M14 that I just bought from the EE Forum. It's one of the Can Ammo babies. Very nice and totally indexed from the factory  Now to get out to the range and test fire this weekend and then measure the chamber... :D

Cheers,
Barney

Whats the difference between the full length M14 and the shorty as far as weight and balance? I already have a full length M14 abut I wondered if the shorty would be better for trekking through the bush while hunting, and of course you can never have too many M14s.

I have both. I wouldn't have thought the few inches should make that much difference but it does feel better to heft, shoulder and shoot than my long barrel.
Better finish, barrel indexed properly, snug gas piston. Sloppy resin drips on the stock, sticky safety, and the same crap rear sight.
