Looking for some 280 AI loads or if some one knows of a good book with some decent info , can you pass on the book title. I would like to use Nosler 140 gr Ballistic Silvertip.I have been searching the web for some loads ,but found that there,s not much load data offered , for free that is. Any input would be great.

Right now I have h414 , h4831 , imr 4831 , rem , fed , cci primers , 140 gr nosler ballistic silvertip bullets. Rifle is a rem 700 mtn, with a 22in barrel, 280 rem to 280 AI conversion.Have not fired it since the work was done , need to go out and fire form some brass. I have a box of factory nickel brass shells ,not sure if I should try to fire form those , any experience with nickel cases?

I am just starting with the 140gr ABs as well.
H4831SC is a favorite with some others I know that shoot the caliber and weight.I use rem brass hulls and just loaded 154gr FB hornadys with a starter load of H450,seated them into the lands and formed away.I have had luck with the 160gr AB bullets with IMR7828,I just want to shoot the 140gr AB as my deer load.RB

Nickel brass is fine, just make sure it is cleaned very well before reloading. My best powders in this round have been RL-22, RL-19 and H-4831. If you need some data send me a pm.

I am using H4350 in my 7 mystic (same thing, shorter neck) but have tried H4831sc as well. 162gr AMax or SST lit by a Fed 210M primer. Right now in Fed GM brass but will eventually switch to Win when the Fed wears out.
You can start with 280 data then go to the max velocities of a 7RSAUM. Case volume is very similar and if run at magnum pressures, you will be very close to the same velocity given the same bullet. Powder amounts may be different due to lot and barrel/primer/case but velocity is not too bad of an indicator.
Go slow when you work up. I like 1/2gr increments. Then going back through the sweet spots in 3 tenth increments.

Hmmm got the same rifle same cartridge...Just starting to work up loads. Nickle brass... Doug Derner at Hornady strongly suggests staying away from it, but if you want some more, Ken has some at the shootist in St. Albert
Going to the range to fire form some brass for the 280 AI , I have some rem factory shells that I am going to fire form ,and some reloads , some books stat that light loads to be used to avoid to much stretch , others say a good load is needed with enough snap to form properly , I,m confused. Smith said that I could shoot any kind of 280 round to form AI brass.

Yip any factory 280 ammo will fireform just fine. For all of my A.I. cartridges, I use a medium "book" load. Forms the brass nice. I know guys that use reduced loads with kapok, etc., but why bother.
My experience with nickeled brass has led me to the conclusion that if you want to fireform it, do so with virgin brass. If you saved your silver once fireds from a previous rifle in the standard .280, don't even look at them. Of course, it is poor practice to EVER use previously fired brass to form wildcats, but the urge to cheapness does rear its ugly head! All I know for sure is that nickeled brass has helped me form my opinions of the relative strengths of several actions and how they can fail.
Did some fire forming at the range and I was surprised with the nice groups with 280 rem rounds fired from the new 280 AI chamber. Well back to the bench to reload the fire formed brass , I,m going to seat the bullets for the 280 AI the same as a factory 280 rem round , what about crimping , I always crimped my 280 rem reloads , should I crimp the 280 AI?
General rule that I follow is not for target loads, and only for hunting bullets that have a cannelure in the correct location. If I crimp, I like the Lee Factory Crimp die. I realize that this doen't help much with a 280AI, though.

Actually, the Lee factory crimp die works with the improved versions of the cartridge it s designated for. I use my 375 H&H die to crimp 375 Wby, and the 6mm die does 6mm Ackley.

Yes , I e-mailed Lee Precision and they informed me that the crimp die for the 7mm express will also crimp the 280 AI , tryed it and it works great , Ilike to crimp because of rough handling of ammo durning hunting.

Nosler Book #4 uses Kenny JARRETT for the cover story on the .280 Rem. Ackley Improved. The loads run all the way from 120 grain to 175. When they show the most accurate load it is generally bang on, and the Most Accurate Powder is a good place to start.
