looking for 280rem advice

I am trying to set up a load for my new(to me) remington mountain rifle in 280, and I am running low on time before hunting season.

I only have a few bullet choices on hand right now, 140accubonds, 139interbonds, and a few 160barnes x.

I tried 8 different loads with the accubonds and RL19 which was noslers recommended powder, and didnt get anything promising.

the smallest 3 shot group I got was around 2.5" at 100, this is with a 7x scope, am I expecting too much?

would appreciate any advice from the 280 veterans out there. as I dont know how much I can endure at the bench with this light gun, I think I need a decellerator pad for it. kind of ashamed to admit that haha
 
Check that all your scope ring and mount screws are tight. Torque your action screws to about 35 inch pounds.
If the rifle is used make sure to clean the barrel down to the metal as the previous owner may have left a build up of carbon, copper or worse yet moly.
There is a fore end pressure point that sometimes hurts accuracy, you can temporarily free float the barrel by adding several cardboard shims under the action behind the recoil lug, many Remingtons I've owned shot better with the barrel free floated.
 
If recoil off the bench is bothering you, try a bag of sand or shot between the rifle and your shoulder to help absorb the recoil. Keeps your mind on shooting and not on the pain. You won't feel the shot when hunting.
 
It is not at all unusual that one particular bullet/powder combination produces less than satisfactory results.You often have to try a few powder/bullet combinations to find an accurate load.How far are the bullets seated from the lands?
 
Mine likes 56 grains IMR4350 under a 140 Accubond, pretty stiff though, approach with caution. Velocities around 3125 average, but shoot into an inch with my Browning A-bolt
 
Mine really likes 51.5 of RL-17 under a 160 Accubond. Haven't worked up any 140 grain loads yet.
Try the RL-17, you won't go back.

Obviously something is screwy here. Has this rifle ever shot better than this?? Pick a bullet that has worked for you in the past with other rifles, Partition have always been quit accurate for me. Next I'd be sure looking at the scope. OK this if you know for sure you are starting with a clean slate namely a clean barrel. I have rifles that you don't have to clean from one decade to the next but I also have ones that will go to s**t after 10 rounds.
I've had a Remington Mountain rifle in a 25-06 and I found it very touchy to barrel pressure. I mean nothing more than be aware of how you are placing the rifle in the rest and if the barrel is touching something. My problem was the rest stop was touching barrel when I was shooting the lower targets in a completion. Great loads just went to s**t.
