I have been looking for some .30-30 brass. Checked my local gun stores, but nothing too promising (one had one box of Hornady, but I have read that Hornady brass might not be so good). Anybody got a source for this stuff? I haven't been looking long, but right now it seems like unobtanium. Alternatively, I guess I could buy some factory cartridges, shoot 'em, then I have brass. If that is what it comes to, what would you fellows recommend for getting decent re-loadable brass?

The relatively low pressure of the 30-30 means any brand of factory ammunition will be just fine for reloading.

i bought a dozen of cheap box couple of years ago, mostly 15$ remington and 18$~ federal. i shoot and reloaded them 5-6time and am still going.
30-30 is real smooth on the brass, its the crimping that kills them.

Your local gun shop can order anything you want. Be prepared to pay up front. Most FNG's reload the factory brass they've fired. Nothing wrong wih Hornady anything either. Federal brass is known for being softer than other brands though. Only means it doesn't last as long.

If all prices are equal stay away from the federal brass they are weaker than other. Hornady brass has tight primer pocket so it's hard to push a new primer in but other than that I don't think Hornady is bad. Winchester is my favorite so far I have reloaded them more than 6 times each and there is no sign of splitting or weakening. Some of my federal split after the 3rd reload.

Walmart is selling Winchester 150gr for 17.97 right now..... Less than a buck a round after taxes! And the brass is pretty good to! The store closest to me has 15-20 boxes of it on the shelf...... I buy a couple of boxes every couple of weeks. Everything else they have is $30+, so I figure I don't wanna be greedy, 4 boxes a month (2 every payday) doesn't seem like overkill...... In the last 15 months I've amassed quite a stockpile of 30-30 in 150gr...... About 10 months ago it went from $14/box to $17..... I expect that once the distributor runs out the price will increase again! According to the sports dept. manager, it's the only ammo they order that still comes in on a regular basis. Also according to him they sell 4-5 boxes a month.......

I guess I'm the only one still shooting 30-30???? But then I can see 3 miles standing on the ground, so 30-30 is considered pretty anemic here in the flat prairie!

New brass could be a bit hard to find otherwise..... Not much call for 30-30 now-a-days.
