Looking for .308 semi advice

Ever since I was a wee laddie, I have always had a hanker'in to own a BAR in 308win.
It just seems to make my taste buds salvataste.
They just are always up there in price.
Need to kon sider maybe swapp'in something for one.
Dey iz plum purrrrrrrty too.

yep, that's what I'm slowly saving up for, the Shortrax with the oil finish stock. I just have to get one, someday. 308, or I would also consider it in 7mm-08. Anybody out there got one for sale or willing to trade? If a trade, we could make something happen real quick, I'm sure.

I was tempted to not respond, since most of us know that 1/2 MOA is basically competition grade precision shooting, and I can see lots of experienced gunnutz dismissing this thread due to the apparent silliness of the question.

But, if everyone does that, the OP won't get any answers.

So here goes.

There are few real 1/2 MOA firearms out there, period. Very few of that very few are semi-auto. You'd better be ready to basically spend thousands of dollars if you want one. Even then, it will likely need tuning etc.

The other thing is, this is the "hunting and sporting arms" forum - not the precision rifle forum. 1/2 MOA is not needed for a hunting rifle, period. Most hunting rifles are 1.5 MOA and that's just fine. Personally, I only ever met three guys who insisted on having a 1/2 MOA rifle for hunting, and all three of them were basically accuracy nerds who did very little actual shooting or hunting, but for some reason made an apparently random decision that they needed 1/2 MOA rifles. They spent lots of time badmouthing perfectly good firearms and very little time actually hunting, which none of them were actually any good at. The only one of those three guys who I know actually killed anything did so shooting a black bear in a ditch at about 50 yards - apparently you need a 1/2 MOA rifle for this. He also kept bringing up his awesone hunting performance pretty regularly to anyone who would listen.

You can hunt just fine with a 1.5 - 2.0 MOA Norc M14 if you want, or any of the other readily available semi's.

"...the AR10 platform..." Not just restricted. Prohibited. Crying shame too.
"...1/2 moa?..." Not without a great deal of expensive mods. Semi's just don't do that. Most out of the box, bolt action, hunting rifles won't do that either. Like Northman999 says, you don't need that kind of accuracy for hunting anyway.
How much money are you thinking? A range will do. Remember the optics aren't included, if you want a scope.

Thanks for the responses! I don't think i'll be able to shoot anything well without some training, critique and lots of range time. Hell i may never shoot as good as i did when i was younger. If 1/2 moa isn't possible with a semi, i'm sure not going to try to prove anyone wrong. I'd just like a semi that is capable of being sharper than most. If a bolt is the gun that will always outshoot me, i guess i'll get a nice bolt action. One of my reasons for looking for something precise is to have some friendly competition with my dad.

Oh btw, my thread was moved here, I didn't create it here.

Edit: i'd like to stay under $3.5k

Ok, now your expectations is a little clearer....sort of. Since you have written the test, you know that you cannot use a restricted firearm for hunting purposes...right? It's a shame that the RCMP classify semi automatic rifles by the "evocation of emotion" they bring, as most black looking rifles are restricted. Very functional, but restricted. That means no hunting allowed.

The Benelli is a good rifle and so is the BAR. I am not overly fond of the BAR's magazine system, but that is just me. When I owned my BAR, it could not compete with my bolts, so I sold it. The M14, a personal favorite of mine, is also very reliable and quite accurate with some tuning but it is a very clunky rifle. When outfitted with a scope, it is as heavy as my 13 lb Pedersoli Rolling block.

I went back to the controlled feed, floor plated bolts as I just cannot beat them for absolute reliability, accuracy and price.
