My dad is training for a competition in the USA, he like to use .38 special wadcutter but it seems to be hard to find and brutally expensive when you do. Does anyone know of a place to get it in bulk at decent prices? I have looked and have come up dry.

Thank you for any help.

A local range in Montreal reloads 38 special. they always have round nose and wadcutters. I don’t know where you’re from or if they ship, but can always PM me for more help.

Price is really good too. And ammo is very well reloaded and is consistent

OP. Add your location to your profile so we can give you good advice. Ammo is expensive to ship, so you would like to know of a local source, right? So where is "local" to you?

I have purchased commercial reloads with 148 WC bullets. They were Wolf brand, bought from SFRC. Worked well.

There are commercial re-loaders in various parts of the country. That would be your best bet.

You and your dad should take up re-loading.

SFRC has a sale on right now. 38Spl 148WC is $359 a case of 1000. They have a special deal now of 12% off. Just add the code Christmas12 on the checkout code.

I've bought 38 special wad-cutters from Custom Reloading Services, and still use them to bench mark my own load development. They are usually 2/3rds the cost of factory ammo and make quality commercial reloads.

What kind of competition is your dad doing? If it's a PPC or Bullseye style, he will probably want to develop a load specific to his revolver. What groups well at 50m in one revolver may not group well in another revolver.

I can't imagine doing an accuracy-based competition with factory rounds. Recommend reloading. BDX makes a lead 148 hbwc, Campro makes a 148 hbwc plated.

We are in kincardine Ontario. Small town Bruce county. My dad used to be a top contender for shooting in New Brunswick 30 years ago. He has been out of competitions for a very long time. He plans on going to canam games in the Ozarks this summer. He wants fully loaded ammo full wadcutter 148gr is what he requested. I think reloading is a bit time consuming/setup cost a bit unrealistic for his current plans. Thank you everyone for the help.

Reloading might be time consuming but you can tailor make the rounds to the power factor you want . and you never know if you going to get a dud unless you make them yourself. get a single stage rock chucker and the other goodies and go to town .

The market for any kind of loaded 38spl in hbwc is definitely a rip off. They want more than 223 rifle ammo, I've been seeing $0.55/round, when you can reload them for probably $0.15/round and get way more accurate.

It depends on what distances he's going to be shooting, and if it's more for just fun or a more serious test of skill. I got involved with PPC this last year, and started working up loads and testing at 50m. The difference between factory, commercial reloads, and my own reloads tuned to my PPC revolver were dramatic.

my testing setup - Ransom Rest setup to shoot over a chrono with target at 50m

my first round of test ammo

Winchester grouped horribly, couldn't even find 2 of the shots

The Custom Reloading Services was ok. At least I could find all 6 shots lol

I narrowed down to a couple loads for a 2nd round of testing. This one is looking promising, so looking to follow this one up with a little tweaking. My goal for 2018 is to make Master ;)

How far away is the chrono?

Do you shoot outdoor PPC? Here it is mostly a wintertime indoor activity on a 25m range, so we rarely shoot 50m.

Please PM me if you know a source for quality PPC revolvers. I have one but ran into lack of talent (1405-1408 usually, so low Sharpshooter?), interested in trying to skirt that issue by buying a different gun.

The chrono is set up 10ft downrange of the Ransom Rest. I'm trying to see if there's a correlation between good groups and good chrono results. I'll confess my inner child is a geek, but I'm well adjusted to that bwahaha.

I shoot with the LEAP (Law Enforcement Action Pistol) at our club a couple times a month on our 50m outdoor range. Unfortunately we don't have any indoor ranges, but then our winters are a tad milder than yours lol. I'm only ranked Sharp Shooter right now, but hopefully can improve on that next year. Just wish I'd started this earlier when my eyesight was a lot better ;)

I bought this one off of the Equipment Exchange. I see one listed every now and then, so you just have to keep checking. You could also ask Murray Charleton. He does most of the S&W work out here in the west so he may know of any good ones for sale :)

If you are going single stage and do a large amount of reloading, a good turret press would be a better choice. The dies are set only once and if you want to load other calibers additional turrets are relatively cheap.

If you get down south around Hamilton area,Lawrys in Caledonia has 38Spcl 158gr SWC wolf reloads for $20 a box of 50.
* never mind read it wrong not WC... only SWC*
