I am an old deer hunter who needs to buy a first scope.
I have not been a scope user except for tree stand situations using a shotgun or a crossbow where the target is relatively unmoving and I have lots of time. Otherwise, I have not been successful in picking up moving animals in a scope.
I have used receiver mounted aperture sights for over 25 years and felt pretty satisfied. Recently, my eyesight has gone south and I have had a lot of trouble even with these open sights. Tried a red dot (which I had used for turkey for several years) but they seem to have pretty poor optics - I could see the deer in the brush a lot better with my own eyes than I could through the red dot.
Anyway, I think I want a scope without any magnification for when I am walking through the bush and likely to encounter a moving deer and still have the option of cranking up the scope for longer shots.
One other factor is the size of the scope. I spend most of my time still hunting or driving the bush for other hunters. I need something relatively small.
I shoot a BLR.
Any thoughts on my needs and what I should bet would be greatly appreciated.
