I want to buy my kid his first rifle.
He shoots everything I own but it's time for him to own one himself.

This will be strictly for plinking, Not hunting...
Semi auto for sure...
I already have a GSG-16 so I don't want another...

What do you guys recommend??

Depends on how much you want to spend, I bought my son a 22 Savage. This year I gave him my Mossberg 535 and bought myself a new Mossberg 835

Ruger 10/22 , still using my 1965 second year production , still running great and shooting true ! . Have a bunch of other/newer models but always go back to it . Great after market for dress ups !

Ever considered a 9mm pcc? Great for range plinking and its more satisfying shooting something center fire IMO. 10 round pistol mags are great and 9mm is still fairly cheap (for now). Ruger PC or FX9 would great IMO. Wish I had one when I was 12 lol.

If he likes the GSG-16, give him that one. Can hardly do much better and you'll save a couple hundred.

I'm ok with your/his desire for a semi auto. There are lots of them out there at reasonable prices.

Why not tweak his interest in precision shooting and pick up a rifle that is capable of half inch or less groups at 50-100 yards??

I don't know of a semi auto that is capable of this but some are very accurate, including Browning BAR, Ruger 10/22 with modifications and some European offerings.

12 is a good age to start young people on accuracy before quantity.

And now for something completely different

Why not introduce him to a lever action rifle. A whole new world. A lot of fun. Very accurate. Not all that expensive.

I would get something special like a Remington 552 BDL Fieldmaster or a Thompson center R/22 or a browning buck mark rifle. Something with open sights. He can always scope it later. I like Ruger so have one for me and two for my boys already. I already shoot one of them with my son who is seven. I cut a stock down to fit him, have several magazines and just load a round in each and shoot CCI quiet most of the time.

Get him a Ruger 1022 and a lever action,
The Ruger is hard to beat when it comes to customizing and making it personalized , benefit of the lever action , aside from being lite and slim is you can use 22 shorts , long and long rifle.

22 long and shorts are kind of rare to find on the shelf anymore are they not? A great idea though if you can get them.

Ruger 10/22. Reliable, reasonably rugged and accurate, comes apart easily for cleaning, not fussy on ammo, lots of aftermarket bits, not expensive.
I'd say "A no-brainer" - but I don't want to offend anyone.
