Looking for a .223 bolt action

Why, the CZ 527, of course.

That's a real beauty in a plastic world..

I love the 527 in .223... but I hated the magazine... it is located right at the balance point and made field carry awkward and uncomfortable... I sold it off for a Ruger M77 MKII, don't regret it... and don't miss the DBM.

Don't pass up a chance to handle the Zastava M85 rifles... Especially a full stock if you can find one.

I have the M85 in x39 with a full stock, and man... I'm quite impressed. For $350 less than what you'll pay for a CZ, you still get a great rifle. The fit and finish on the wood is not on the same level of "Amazing" as on a CZ, and it has an internal drop-floor mag instead of detachable box magazines (which comes down to preference - the nice thing about an internal mag is the bottom fits flush with the rifle, has a cleaner line, and I find nicer to carry).

You can also fine tune the trigger on the M85 rifles to an amazing degree, with nothing more than a screwdriver and a bit of patience.

I always steered away from that CZ and other similars for that very reason.

Perhaps from cutting my teeth on Lee Enfields I like the magazine arrangement on my CZ 527 as well as the older Brno Foxes, and never noticed that it caused a problem for carrying the rifle at the balance. Another rifle with a similar magazine arrangement is my Unique T Dioptra .22 rimfire, a rifle I sought for 30 years, and is on my never sell list.

Hi, I am looking to get a .223 (bolt action) for target and coyote hunting. I looked at a bunch of reviews online and now I can't decide. A lot a brand name came up : CZ 527, Rem 700, Tikka T3 lite, Ruger M77, Savage ... I am very picky when it come to buying stuff. I don't want to buy a rifle and sold it after a few month to get an other one. What would you recommend?

I would recommend the Tikka T3 Lite. I also have a CZ 527 (albeit in .204 Ruger), and its been a great rifle, but I understand their .223 has 1 in 12 twist rifling, and that brings with it somewhat reduced flexibility.

Hope to get my new .223 Savage Hog Hunter out tomorrow and find out what the 1 in 9 twist likes. Bad thing is its only 50 yards but from the groups (so so) I have been seeing from other rifles should be able to get a rough idea.

My land has both open pasture areas, wetlands, creek areas and both soft and hardwood bush areas. I tend to stalk, walk, sit, repeat. Not wanting to do that kind of hunting with a heavy barrelled brute I picked up a 2007 Browning A Bolt SSA 223, matte black steel and Mossy Oak Brush Dura Touch stock. It has a Bushnell Elite 3000 3x9x40. Loaded, my carry weight is under 7 lbs. The SSA makes it a little bit slighter than a standard short action A Bolt, sort of a scaled down version, but it is super accurate and a pleasure to haul around over hills, fields and through the bush all day long.
