Looking for a 30-06

Just buy a used Savage Axis for four hundred , and call it a day . You might have to upgrade the glass , but not always . I have several Savage Axis's , and know of a ton of others who use them as well....and not one issue that I am aware of ,and they all shoot like laser beams ; plus you don't have to worry about dropping or scratching them .

I want a decent 30-06 for somewhat cheaper. Don't mind a fixer upper but I don't want to spend a fortune. I mean I WANT to but my wife might have something to say about it. Trying to get something for before rifle season in Berta Nov 1 but if it's after season then c'est la vide.
Intersurplus has a ton of em.

I agree with the Savage choice. Older used models could be a very good choice for something inexpensive. I love my Savage 116 Weather Warrior in 30-06. Nice features (Accu trigger, Accustock, etc.) and very good value for the money. I bought mine used, and scope was even included in the sale. A real bargain for a new hunter.
New? Used?
The new ones I have experience with are:
Howa 1500 pr'aps? Under a grand with a scope, can be had below 800. ca700 no optics.
- Quite smooth action, very accurate, feeds really well.
- Awesome for the price

Savage 110 Trail Hunter
- Very accurate, plasticky stock, roughish bolt
- Cheaper than Howa (usually)

I'd skip the Axis, unless you REALLY want new and the budget is as it is.

Used, my faves:
- Can't beat a Husqvarna Swedish mauser. I'd select a 1640 or 1900 (have both) so that they are made of newer, modern steel.
- However, the older ones like sporterised military HVAs are amazing rifles as well

As some have already posted there are some decent new options available.

As well, already posted, probably your best value immediately available is a used Husqvarna 1640 M98 in 3006, $495 on InterSurplus. These are a well built rifle with few issues. While the M96 is also a well built rifle it is not as strong as the M98, so for modern loads it is advisable to get the M98. The only other quirk of significance, which I read on the internet not from personal experience, is the twist rate on some of the barrels is 1/12 which may not perform well with longer bullets like some of the all copper ones.

My version of this is a 1959 FN Belgian Browning. M98 action, beautiful action, barrel, sights, etc. Found it on a used rack for IIRC $270 - but that was a few years ago.

Why? I say stop :p Find something more interesting and less basic

When you kill stuff with it it becomes interesting enough. Try it.

How many dozen does it take before that kicks in? Still waiting, its still a 10 on the pH scale. Basic.

Still using it this year but thats more because I like Win 70s than the chambering, which I'd happily do without. But it'll be fun to see what 110gr Barnes TTSX do.

Like mentioned from others,
A decent Husquvarna with controlled round feed (understand how Mauser controlled feed works) or a Savage Axis.
As cheap as they are (Savage) I love working on and accurizing these rifles. Stiffen up the forestock with cut to fit carbon arrows and epoxy, stiffen up the wrist with epoxy and fill butt with spray foam.
Play with the trigger (plenty of YouTube diy videos).
And if you want to go extra , bed the action. All for under $500 (used axis).
Your choice in caliber is wise. It’s great for pretty much any/all North American big game. And ammo availability is popular so most stores have it on the shelf.

Save your brass and consider reloading down the road.
The LEE Classic reloader is all you need besides your components to get you started then you can upgrade when ready.
