I'm considering a Thompson Center Venture, a Rem. 700 or an Axis. I've got a Venture now in .223 and I like it. So-so on the accuracy. I've also got a Rem. 700 in .308 but it's been turned into a target rifle. A buddy of mine has an Axis in .223 and with a little trigger work he has made it into a tac driver.

If you would tell me which you would by and why that would be great.

Thanks,
Trevor

The Thompson Center Venture has a 5R barrel. It won out a recent budget rifle shoot out by Long Range Accuracy magazine. All were bolt action rifles in .308. Currently on news stands.

None of 'em. If you do a little digging around you can pick up dis-continued Weatherby Vanguards for less than $400.
These are 10x the rifles a Savage axis or TC Venture are and at least you have something worth owning. I bought one in .243 for $349 as a beater coyote gun and the thing shoots lights out!

I wouldn't restrict myself to those three, but if that were all that was available I would go with the T/C Venture. Firstly, because I haven't heard anything bad about them or anyone reporting they aren't happy with theirs. Secondly because although the Remington 700 is a good design I have a distaste for that company and they have had an apparent drop in production quality in recent years, and although the Axis is said to shoot well, and very well for the price, the one I tried had a sticky bolt, and the stock didn't feel comfortable to me, and Savage makes nicer rifles for not much more money so I'd be sorry I didn't save up a bit longer and get one of those.

If you can wait a bit longer we should be hearing more reports on the Ruger American.

The Wby Vanguard came in at #3 overall in the shootout.
