Looking for a 45 - can you help me?

For me, the answer to any question about pistols that includes "45" is...1911

My suggestion for your first 1911, if you go that route, is the Ruger SR1911. Available lightly used on the EE regularly for $700 or less, fit and finish that rivals much more expensive models, very nice adjustable trigger. If you don't like it you can sell it for what you paid for it.

I wanted to try a .45 too, so I ordered a Dominion Arms commander from Canada Ammo on sale it was $230 shipped and taxes in, it looks much more expensive then it is and shoots really accurate. I had to strip it down and polish alot of stuff up, but it is very smooth now and I can't see a $700-$1000 1911 being much better honestly. Plus if I do scratch it or wreck it, I'm only out $200 or so.

As you said, one of these things is not like the other. What do you want to do with your 45?

Another vote for the Glock 21, either Gen3 SF or Gen4.

Right now, I'm just looking to do some paper killing so that I can get proficient with a 45.

If I like it, I'm hoping that I might get to the point where I can handle it skillfully enough to do some 3 gun or IPSC. However, if that time comes, I'll probably buy another 45 and set it up as a race gun (which most likely will be a 1911, as all race guns are).

I love my Glock 34, but I'm looking to diversify lol.

I find a 1911 more fun to shoot. I can't say why - i just enjoy it more. You would think that a "good" 1911 is more fun than a not as good one but it isn't necessarily so. The most enjoyment I've had in a .45 1911 has been a $300 Norinco 1911A1. I bought it as a plinker and didn't have high expectations. It's not the most accurate or the best at anything. But it is accurate, reliable, and has a certain nostalgic cachet. It's fun, it's forged, and it's solid.

Having owned a USP 45 tactical, two springfield 1911 including a TRP and the HK 45 I can honestly say the HK45 is my favourite. The grip, quality of materials and the finish are amazing. For me, the trigger is great you just need to practice the double action.

I got a nice 1911 for sale here : http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/foru...3-S-amp-W-1911-SC-E-Series-All-black-1300-SHP

Having said that, Id really recommend handling all 3.

I really don't like the 1911 platform. First. Trigger guard is "small" for my giant hands. Makes it tough to get on trigger fast (might be overcome with practice).

I do own a HK45 and it is awesome to shoot. Feels really awesome in the hand and fills the right spots.

Never tried the last one though.

When it comes to pistols, its personal preference (hence selling the 1911 after only a few mags through it). Some will fit you others wont. That's why I push for try before you buy, if possible.

If you go for the FNX45 (or the very similar FNP45) or the HK45, you should try them first. I found that the HK fit my hand perfectly, while the FN didn't. I know another guy who had the exact opposite experience. Both excellent guns - I own both.

I've also owned numerous 1911s, but have moved on from that platform. Nice enough, but there are better modern guns out there. Just my personal opinion.

There are different length triggers available for the 1911 you know?

From time to time an STI Spartan comes up in the EE. Despite being the "entry level" STI, its a fine pistol. Apparently they aren't being imported into Canada any more (?? according to Gunnar at Armco). :)

...on this note, I recently received a Glock 21. Can marvelous and Glock be used in the same sentence? (G21 is a .45acp for those unfamiliar)

Oh yes it can.

My Glock 21 Gen 4 became one of my favorite after i swapted in the 3.5 pounds spring and connector kit...
What a difference, totally different pistol, with great precision
Before it was a paper weight... JP.

I love both the Sig and Glock platforms (I have each one, just in 9mm), with specific love to my G34. I keep telling myself to go down that route cause if it ain't broke, don't fix it, but I also just need a new love in my life lol.

I'm going to take everyone's advice and give them all a go. I'm going to do a little bit more research into 1911s as well, as shamefully, I don't know too much about them.

Question: Theres been some mention of STIs on this thread - are they one of the best 1911s? I've heard of Wilson combat, Kimber, I know Sigs make them...so my question is which 1911s should I be looking at in 1500-2000$ range ( I know not Wilson for sure :p )? Thanks for your continued help!!

If you're willing to go up to ~$2,0000 I would suggest a Les Baer Monolith Commanche…..###y accurate 1911 and I love the look of the full dust cover.
