I really like the Ar-15 but being restricted is a big turn off for me as I dont want to be limited to only shooting on the range as I sometimes like to shoot on the property.

What are some of my options for a non-restricted style?

So far it looks like I have found out on this site the:

SL8
XCR
Mini-14

are all non restricted but you pay alot more compared to a 1400$ armalite AR-15.... Vs 2000$ + for an SL8.

What are some some rifle recomendations? I prefere to stick with the 5.56/.223 for the fact that I can purchase ammo for a reasonable price compared to other calibers.

Thanks for helping.

This set up will set you back about $1100 and is non-restricted firing .223. It's a modified Kel Tec SU16F

You could also look into getting a CZ858 chambered in .223.

I know what you mean brutus. Cant seem to get one solid anwser for a particular rifle though.
My opinion only goes so far though Silverfox. I'm lacking in the .223 department. My Hornet and 222 are boltguns, and my centrefire semis are Garands, full length and T-26 Tanker copy, one Voere 2185 in 30-06, and a very old Polytech M-14S. So I can't really help you with .223 opinions friend, other than I once sold a Mini-14 Ranch Rifle with zero regrets. You can probably guess why.

good luck to you......

welcome to in the internet, for every solid answer you will get ten complete opposite opinions based on a story they heard from their uncle's barber's niece who saw it on a television show.

Your best bet is to search this place for range reports and writeups on rifles of interest and narrow it down to 2 or 3. Plenty of info on all of them here.

Then see if you can handle them at a shop or better yet, test drive them at a range.

Depends what you want it for. The Mini most regard as a POS, however its fairly robust and used ones are cheaper than the alternatives. Plus there is also the hassle factor, in the woods you might get shaken down over a Tavor, but merely derided and laughed at over a Mini! :p

I think everybody buys a Mini sooner or later, most dont seem to keep them.

The new Mini-14 581 series is good to go "There is abig differance between the old and new"

Mini-14 581 pro's

-rugged "soldier proof"
-Good accuracy " 2-3inchs at 100m "
-100% reliable
-Price
-Ambi controls

Mini-14 581 Con's

-Mags are a pain to get
-limited on optic mounts
-WWII lay out
-people will call you names :p
-slow mag changes

"I cant speak for the XCR"

Yea looks like there are a few more options

Mr1
Su-16f
SL8
and I think the Type 97 is non restricted as well

Anyone know of a play in the lower mainland where you could possibly see some of these models etc. Like the Idea of the su-16f with the AR stock conversion.

Thanks for the help everyone.

The Norinco Type 97 controversy is still on going so they haven't been classified quite yet.

Reliable Guns has an MR1, SU-16F and an SL8 there and a couple of Swiss Arms you could go take a look at. The SU will be stock though so won't be able to see it with the AR adapter on it.

mini mags are not hard to get at all. Most gun shops carry them. Factory mags are the best. I keep reading all these stories about how poor the mini is, but I've yet to see any problems with mine. I bet it has a lot to do with the sights, and people not knowing how to use them.

hi guys . new to the furom .but been viewing for long time. came across your thread.i bought mini target a year ago . loved it at first . very accurate. but not a good gun to hunt with . so i did some mods to it , like chop barrel to 181/2'' trigger job . now just waiting for the promag sparta stock to come and im done. shoots great . kills yots out to 200 yards no problem.all these other guns your looking at were all around 2 g notes here. my mini was just over a 1 g.and from what i have heard , the new minis shoot well to .
