I have had two black bears in 20 years charge at me but stop at 25ish meters. Never had to shoot one. Once I had a single shot 22. The other a 410. Both times hunting small game
But that being said my 14". 870 with a 1oz magnum slug chronoed at 1300fps should do it. Federal flight control 00buck also would be a option and patterns very well at 30meters and in with my cyl bore barrel

What a rotten presentation angle should you have to kill him. I'd go for the old "intersection of 2 lines from each ear to opposite eye".

I agree with your aiming point though, but given his forward progresion I'd be expecting to spine him rather than brain him.

1) We had a black bear sniff out our tent while sleeping
2) Had a very large black bear charge my truck head on while stopped on a logging road. He stopped at about 20 yards and wandered into the bush
Encounter #1, I was happy to have a 12g pump attached to my trigger finger.... very unsettling

I am kind of surprised about the weight difference, however I can understand your preference for the supernova since it is a lot more compact, also the magazine cutoff is a very useful feature.
Personally, I don't carry a gun for critter defense (although since moving to Eastern Ontario, not an issue). I have a nifty little Warrior lever shotty with 14" barrel, but it can be finnicky. I also have a Norc 2000 side-by-each with 12" barrels. It's heavy, but reliable as hell and you have 2 shots. That would be my choice. If I lived in the Arctic, I would likely carry one, as someone of my size and agility would probably be viewed as a rather tasty meal, given that we are, apparently, just below seal and above narwarhl on the buffet menu.

Not sure if they still make these or not, its my only box left but have carried them out in the wilderness before:
For critters (bears), use Brenneke slugs or Federal Deep Penetrator slugs. Most slugs deform too much to generate adequate penetration in head on shots on bears. Buckshot - doesn't matter who makes it - doesn't penetrate enough either. Buckshot will perform nicely on cats. Locally, Brennekes show up in early Spring, and are gone before the end of the first month - there is a reason for that.
Score slugs are loaded with BPI thug slugs. Not quite as good as brenneke but they are much tougher than soft fosters and I wouldn't doubt their performance. Just another option since Brenneke and Fed deep penetrators aren't stocked in my area. I'm tired of paying a massive premium for a round thats so scarce and not being able to train with them.
The Score slugs are a good training round for Brennekes - I really can't figure out why no one brings in a sea can of Brennekes, it isn't like there's not the demand. I buy every box of Brennekes I see.
Where are Score slugs sold now that NoSaleSports is done? Or Brenneke for that matter?
Honestly I haven't looked locally since I have so many boxes at home. But I would sure bet Score has been working with distributors to pick up the slack now that no-sale is sunk. I should probably go shopping.
