EDIT: Thanks for all the input, I ended up going with a Weatherby Vanguard S2 which is really what I wanted anyways. I was not planning on buying one so quickly but found a deal on an as new one from a friend for a price I just couldn't resist. Installed a scope and will give it a go.

I have a Savage 110 Scout in .223. I bought it as a fun repeater for the range and it cycles great and is a lot of fun with steel shooting Irons. I am really thinking of getting a BCL Bison but realize it will just be another range toy which is why I bought the scout plus I really dont find a chassis stock to be terribly comfortable. The scout has a lot of flash and is loud as heck on its own. So I would like to find another rifle that is of the same quality as the scout for longer range shooting instead. Looking to spend up to $900 I already have a scope. I have looked at other 110’s and a few others but there are so many options its hard to choose. Most of my shooting will be on the range. I shoot a lot of rimfire but not handled many centerfires. Hopefully will attend a few local matches and get to try a few out.

I was thinking of a weaherby vanguard. Not looking to buy anything tomorrow, just wanting to get some good leads.

I just love my old Savage in .223, very accurate, very reliable.

Bought my Hog Hunter for 469.00 years ago, dropped her into a MDT stock and completely transformed the feel and love the poly and metal magazines. :)


Not my pic, but it is a Hog Hunter/110 action.

Not too common but worth the wait.
Take a look at a Rem. model 7 in 223, not many aftermarket parts available, so it will never be a 500 yard range gun, but I enjoy mine none the less, but I also use mine for non range activities.
The short barrel makes it easy to pack and handle.
My soft spot for these led to a 243 and 308 in the same model
A bison is a clunky mess of a gun, happy day when I sold it.



 
I'd go with a Tikka T3x. Probably a "Lite" for me, but as you wish. A bit steeper than $900 but worth it, IMO. Even if you find one used.

I'm a +1 for the Rem Model 7 in .223 if you can find one. :cool:

Just wanted to mention the Ruger American in 223. I have an older one (2014-15?) with the Rotary mag and after a few hundred rounds it still shoots MOA out to 200yds.(all my range has) The newer ones come in several models/$ ranges and often come with AICS mags. S/B in your price range and there are some on EE occasionally.

I'm very pleased with a Vanguard 223 in mdt xrs combo that used to be available, prints 1/2"@100 when I get my crap together, need more practice
other vanguards have the same 1:9 twist barrel, shoot 69 grs better than I can
but they've edged above $1100, offered in a nice laminate stock too

Do you have one? If so how do you like it?

With mine, I can't shoot for sh***. I have tried different bullet weights, it just does not want to group that well. I am talking 3-4 MOA. I expected better for the price. Are my expectations unrealistic?
 
Thanks for the input, I am not in a big rush. There is a bass pro nearby I think I will stop by on the way home and handle a few if its not too busy. Fatcatsdad, nice rifle!

By the way if interested here is the scout I picked it up as we do steel matches. The irons worked for me but then the guys wanted smaller targets so picked up a scout scope. It really is a great rifle for what it is.

Weatherby Vanguard would be my choice
24 inch barrel you get all the zip from your rounds
H-bar vanguards have the heavier barrel range certified is a bonus

Yes I own a vanguard in 240wby was a idiot when I sold my 223

That's terrible. If it's not the rings/scope I'd be ditching it or returning it.


Rem700, another savage, howa/weatherby, tikka(usually people love them), even a browning xbolt(might be priced too high)
Any of the big common names could fit the bill. They all should shoot straight.
Since you already have the savage, I'd get something different just for kicks.
 
Nothing wrong with the Savage action. I’ve got one with a 22” IBI barrel spun onto it. Right now it’s in an accu-stock, but I’m looking at the Magpul that’s finally on the market, and might upgrade. It’s a nice package, and it shoots as good as rifles that cost a heck of a lot more.

My thoughts exactly mines a 1/8 and it shoots bug holes with 45gr all the way to 68gr and its got nothing special for a scooe 3-9 vortex and leupold rifleman rings. Gun also gets lots of tractor and truck rides too.

I would say its the operator , i would check all of the mounts base and scope and i would make sure that if it has been out of tge stock recently to make sure the recoil lug is mated properly from the action to the stock , and all the stock screws are in around 40 to 50 in/lbs owned and shot alot of tikkas and only 1 i was never happy with

Indeed, I will have to completely check that rifle, rings, scope, ... I am quite certain its not me, I tested the rifle with full sandbag support. With my TRG, I shoot below 1 MOA on a regular basis.
Thanks for the torque settings on the stock.
 
I have a Tikka T3x lite in 223 and a BCL Bison Scout .223 and I really enjoy shooting both. Once I figured out what ammo each of them likes it made shooting them a treat.
