Looking for a bolt action .22 target rifle, opinions wanted.

There is Brno 3 for sale in exchange, which is in the price you wish and
they are shooters. I have a 4 and 5 Brno's as well as CZ and all shoot well
but the #4, like the #3 shoots a bit better than others for target work.

22 Target rifles

The suggestions for the Brno are excellent. Another idea is to look for an older Match or Olyimpic model.A few years back. I obtained a single shot Valmet Lion for the price you have. It was an estate sale from a Toronto pistol club. The older shooter died and his widow gave his guns to his pistol club for sale. Since it was a pistol club no one wanted the rifle. It was advertised in the CSSA newsletter. A quick trip to Mr. Clark for refinishing and I have an excellent target rifle with superb iron sights. The older 1950 and 1960's Olympic guns are not currently competitive but the quality is super and they will still outshoot 99.99% of shooters.

That's luck, If you get a chance at a Finnish Lion, grab it with both hands
as they are as good as anything I have ever seen or shot. I have a win52e
one of the best, and a lion will stay with it.

Another vote here for a Brno 3 or 4. Just picked one up in February from Elwood Epps, and it absolutely rocks!! Came with both peep sights (with numerous inserts...) and a tangent sight, and was well within your budget. You simply cannont go wrong with one of these.

Something to look out for with these though, from an aquaintance of mine who's a gunsmith:

"If you want the heavy barrelled target version, those older model 3's and 4's are terrific, and not usually too high a cost. They came into Canada as "military surplus" rifles from Europe through an old Canadian distributor "Century Arms" that was based in Montreal years ago. One word of warning.... have a very close look through the barrel of any model 3 or 4 you're contemplating buying, as Century Arms also sold a number of these guns in "AS IS" grade, with damaged (ring bulged) barrels. The guns were used as training rifles in Europe by cadets, and if they got a "squib" round that stuck in the bores they didn't know any better and shot them out with the next shot, causing a bulge part way down the barrel. From memory, Century Arms sold several hundred of these guns in that condition at a reduced price for home gunsmiths and small businesses that were willing to buy them damaged and wanted to re-barrel them with new barrels. I've seen several out here that were purchased in that condition, and re-sold with out the barrels being replaced, so watch out for one of those guns if you're checking out a used one at a gun show or in the used rack of a gun shop."

One rifle not to pass on either is one of the russian target rifles. You
don't hear much about them, but they are shooters. Milarm in Edmonton
has a couple of them for sale. Some stocks are ok, older stocks seem
to a little crude, but they shoot, have great triggers as well.

look no further than a Brno or CZ 22....if you can't find a #3 or a #4, get a new CZ 452 Varmint and add sights or better yet, a good scope...they are one of the most accurate, well made 22 rimfires around...

All the above suggestions are very good. I'm not sure if you want a new gun or will settle for a used one but some of the older Remington or Winchester target models are certainly worth considering as are some of the CIL/Anschutz models like the 180 and 190.

I wish I had $500 and wondering what to buy.
Depends what you're looking for - just a good accurate gun for fun or real target stuff.
Do you need a real offhand target stock, semi target, or is sporter OK?
Low end peep or target peep?
My suggestions:
CIL Anschutz 180 or 190
Anschutz Match 64
Any BSA Martini
Any Brno with peep
Browning T-bolt with peep
Any Mauser with peep
Remington 513
Remington 540
Any of the old Savages - 1919, 1922, 23A, 23AA, 19 NRA
Any Sako
Any Walther
Winchester 69
Winchester 75

Any of these are great shooters and you should have change left over from $500 for most of them.
And the best part is, you can sell them for at least what you paid for them.

I like the BRNO #3 but have no idea what they are worth. I have seen a couple I am interested in between 450-500$, is this what they go for?

That seems to be in the general range. I bought a #4 which is quite similar to the #3 off the exchange forum for around $500 in VG+ condition with scope rings, several clips, peeps, some ammo thrown in.

Gotta love the Brno #1 to #5 :D

That savage really has me interested as a economical way to to go. I guess wholesale has em for:

Item No Mfr No Description Cal Type Price Picture

213338 28100 Mark II FVT 22 LR - 349.95

I like the look of the old one though. One of the #3 I am looking at has brno open sights, anyone know if the they would be interchangeable with the original peeps?

The Brno peep will fit the #3 and #4, however you won't find one cheap. There is a Brno front and rear apertures at the St. Catharines gun show for $120.
I've got a #4 with target aperture and another with open sights. Great rifles but heavy. Paid under $300 each.

Do you want a target rifle to plink around, or do you want to try your hand at competitive target shooting.

If you want to shoot in match, you'll need to decide if you want to shoot "Match" or "Sporting".

The best (and most common) sporting rifle in Canada as the be the Anschutz/CIL 190. It should be easy to find a nice one for less then $500

If you want to shoot match, the older martini's are great gun that can be had for less then your $500 limit. If you are lucky to be at the right place at the right time, you might find a Anschutz 54 or Walther match for sell on the cheap...

Mike.
