Hello all, noobie here. I'm looking to get a 12g pump to carry with me hiking for wildlife defence, as well as casual non-competitive target shooting around camp. One option that caught my eye is the Canuck Commander. I like the pistol/stock grip, interchangeable chokes from the factory, and the generally favourable reviews I've found online (though not many reviews exist, good or bad) What are everyone's thoughts on it? Any other recommendations? TIA

I'd recommend a short double barrel of some sort for hiking.
My Rikol 20gg has 16" barrels and takes down easily to just the length of the stock+receiver.
Can't recall exactly how short but I I think it's about 18".
You can get them in 12gg too.
They're light and take down small and if I was a bear or other predator (2 legged included) I wouldn't want to be be on the receiving end of two loads of buckshot or slugs.

The stoeger Condor outback is likewise Short barreled and takes down like a dream.

Short doubles are the bomb for fitting in your backpack.

The shockwave/ tac 14 pump action style gums are likewise only 26" and there are inexpensive Turkish alternative s . These pistol grip pumps require some serious practice to be effective with, but when proficient are very effective weapons.

. I dont regret saying either a pistol grip short barrel or.my takedown double go with me everywhere in my doufle bags. No point in going anywhere unarmed.Even in Canada where locked and stored properly of course :p.

With Remington 870s and Mossberg 500s so easy to find...I honestly don't know why that wouldn't be the approach. I'd also trust either of those 2 for longevity, and reliability..though I have more personal experience with 870s. Currently playing with my first 500, but I've used one before and liked it.

Thanks for the responses. I'll be carrying it with a scabbard most likely, and I'm not too worried about Liberals seeing it. Their Priuses don't make it as far into the bush as my 4x4 lol.

I thought about double barrels, but I do prefer pumps. I liked the feel of the pump more than the double barrel at my PAL course. And idk if PGO would be a great choice for a first firearm lol

I liked the 870s and 500s, but by the time I replace the barrel and add chokes, I think it's gonna be close to $1000. A little more than I'd like to spend on a gun that gets used maybe 3 times a year.

If youre serious about wildlife protection go with something proven. The last thing you want when a bear is charging you is a jam because you went with a knock off or inexpensive option. Find an old 870 Wingmaster or Ithaca 37 with a short barrel. Guns that have proven through decades of use to be reliable.

Anything less then that and youre not seriously considering it for defense, its a fun gun. Theres nothing wrong with fun guns, just dont trust your life on them.

Lots of outdoor pros - geologists and foresters - carry Grizzlies, I'd certainly pick one over an Express. If you can find a Wingmaster for $300 (ish - and if you do, buy a lottery ticket, because it's your lucky day), you'll need to get a barrel for $200 (ish) and refinish it ($200 ish) because, while it's pretty, that bluing isn't particularly durable. You'd still be getting a better gun - on that I agree, it just isn't as cheap as it used to be.
