Looking for a Caribou Cartridge...

25-06 is more than enough for any Caribou,243 would do the job as long as you could place your bullet where you want it.I would feel more secure with the 25-06,nothing wrong with a 7-08 either.

I'm on the Rock too. For big game, my starting point is the 6.5X55mm Swede. The .243 Win can take big game cleanly, but there are better choices out there.

Why limit yourself to those cartridge choices? The .270 Win, .308 Win, .30-06 SPRG are all fine Caribou and Moose cartridges and you can find them in any local Canadian Tire, Wal-Mart or hardware store that still sells ammo. 130gr bullets in the .270, or 150gr in the .30s make for great Caribou rounds. When you switch to Moose, you can bump up to 140gr or 160gr in the .270 & 180gr in the .30s.

If you opt for any of the more esoteric calibers, I strongly urge you to start reloading, as factory ammo is going to be a real biatch to find locally. Those extra shipping and hazmat fees really start to add up every time you need more ammo!

I already have a .30-06, and a .308 and I feel they are WAY too much gun for caribou. I just want a dedicated caribou rifle. I am not looking for a "do all" cartridge. I think I may just stick with the .243 as I can get ammo locally.

I'd forget the .243 and go with the .308. Loaded with a premium 150g partiton or accubond and you're laughing.

Stick to "Premium" loads for the 243, with good shot placement and everyone will be Laughing........
Except the Caribou ;)

I'd vote, .25/06 of that lot. But would rather use a .280 or a .30/06 or any flat shooting round around that size for the tundra variety. The last one I shot was with a .348 from an apreture sighted Win M71. That works.

If you want to buy another rifle the 7-08 would be my pick. However I would have to string with the boys here and say buy a 243 and some premium bullets. You won't ever be sorry.
