I know there are retail substances out there - i think Limbsaver sells a product in the US.

I bevelled the butt heel of my gun a bit - but the pad (the sorbothane type) is still a little "tacky" and it may snag - do any of you have a home grown remedy to slippery up just the heel part of a pad a bit?

The LOP is perfect for me and it comes up great - just that little possible hiccup.

I tried some plain old masking tape to see if the theory works and it worked great - just not very permanent.

Nail polish?

Varathane?

white out?

Get some Armorall wipes at your local Canadian Tire. Give the pad a rubdown every so often and that should make it less stickky. Second choice would be to remove the pad and wrap it in black electrical tape. Not the most attractive looking but it does work.

if you get one of those silicone gun cloths and wipe it with that, it will get more slick. I shoot international skeet and rub the butstock with one so it slides up easier.

I tried electrical tape - worked well but was pretty "trailer-park" lookin'! Then it got tacky on the edges so I took it off. I replaced that with the Limbsaver stuff that you asked about - I bought it here in Halifax. It works very well, but if the pad is soft (which it likely is if it's tacky) it cracks and needs re-application every once in a while (like once a season). Honestly, I would be willing to bet that it is nearly the same as nail polish or fly-tying shellac, but don't quote me on that. If you go with that, I would not put it all the way down the pad though, or you will tend to slip off of your proper mounting spot - just put it on the heel of the pad where it tends to bind on your shirt/coat during the mount. Eventually though, I just had a good gunsmith install the Pachmayr pads with the hardened no-snag insert at the top - I love them and have them on both of my OUs now.

Costs a bit to install, but since I was sending them to him to have them steam-bent and have the LOP shortened to fit me anyways, it was a no-brainer.

just for info - I bought some on sale nail polish and painted on the top 1/5 or so of the pad. It appears to stick well and for now looks like it should last for a while anyway.
