Looking for a decent and inexpensive long range 7.62x54r rifle, maybe SVT?

I had a rare opportunity last summer to shoot old Milsurps on a proper range (guys raising and lowering targets with hits marked). Most everyone there was scoring quite well at 400m prone with a sandbag with iron battle sights. I had along my Mosin PU Sniper but after a few shots rapidly swapped it for a Lithgow SMLE as it seemed too easy. This Mosin was fresh from an arsenal refurb and still dripping grease when I got it. Simply mounted the scope and found it perfectly zeroed at up to 400m with PRVI. It will shoot 1.5 to 2 inch groups at 100yards with no tinkering. That means you could definitely hit a target at 800m. I'm currently playing with SVT's but finding it challenging with some very heavy trigger pulls and other issues but- I have got the odd hint of accuracy. If I can learn how to get some decent groups from one it will be very gratifying. Personally I find little entertainment in using a modern rifle with off the shelf accuracy guaranteed but that's just personal.

Baikal IZH 18MH in x54r is a great 300+ yd iron sight shooter. They have an integral dovetail on the receiver for mounting a scope. Maybe not the milsurp you were wanting to work from, but they're built in Izhevsk factory

"...a Mosin Nagant..." The sniper version. Won't exactly be cheap compared to a PBI rifle. Frontier listed 'em at $599.95 with a repro scope in 'fair' condition only.

Going to have to agree with everyone and recommend a Mosin Nagant. Might help to get a recoil pad for it though, as my arm/chest start to get sore around the 60-80 round mark.
I've been getting fairly good groupings (2-3 inches) with the iron sights at 100 yards.

Nagant!

There is many modification that can be done for Mosin Nagant. There is many videos on youtube where people do up to 2000 meters shots with proper scope. So it is possible :)

thats pretty cool, i would of never guess you could do that with a mosin, i guess i should take my mosin out more haha

There is/was a guy on You tube, shooting a mosin long rifle to the 1200 yard mark and hitting. Took a long time to get there but it did .

Google SVT40 slow motion then mosin nagant slow motion. Check the barrel whip or should I say entire area forward of the reciever whip. Good wood though. This may help you in your quest.

Was wondering when you would chime in :)
By one off these guys op ^^^^^^^^great service and price :)
That reminds me.. .time for another mosin me thinks ;)

Heyyyy Now..westrifle here comes my money;)

I find Mosins are quite inconsistent... Buy three, sell two, and keep the best shooter... I would say the same of ALL the milsurp 7.62 x 54R ammo I've shot.

My 91/30 is faaaaaaaaar more accurate than any SVT40 I've shot, but my M44 and M38s are less.

That said, 800m is a real ask for this round/rifle, even with a scope and hand loads. Only so many Vasily Zeitsev's out there!
