Looking for a decent and inexpensive long range 7.62x54r rifle, maybe SVT?

Nagant!

Actually that's a M96 Swedish Mauser (6.5x55). :p :D

The best mods for a Mosin IMHO are...

- If your not shooting with the bayonet on then adjust the point of aim with the iron sights.
- Use good ammo... Mine shot well with S&B.
- Brass shim the barrel and action under the hand guards.
- Some folks file the side edges of the front sight making it narrower at the top or replacing it.
- Practice, practice, practice.

Oh and here is another vid...

Since this is an old thread I feel like it's ok to derail a bit...

Interesting that most people were saying that the mosin can't perform out to 800 yards :p The cartridge is one of the most efficient out there in regards to size and shape, and past that it's a standard 30 caliber projectile in the 150-190gr range... no reason why it wouldn't perform like any other rifle. Mosin actions are strong and can take a heck of a beating, so as long as the stock's not pressing hard on the barrel, the throat, bore and muzzle are good there's no reason for them not to do well. Personally I quite like my mosin - very accurate and fun. Only real downside is that it's heavy to carry in the bush all day when I'm usually seeing deer at 50 yards or so... for that reason I use a 30-30 :p

At the range though? Mosin for sure. Hand loaded 150gr seem to shoot super well in mine.
