Looking for a dirt cheap .22

As the title states, I am looking for a dirt cheap .22. When I mean dirt cheap, I mean less than the price of dinner and a movie.

I was hoping to avoid semi auto and go with a bolt action, lever (unrealistic) or pump. I have been combing the EE for options and constantly see different single shot cooeys for sale. While single shot isn't exactly what I am looking for it is safe and probably plenty of fun to shoot.

So for someone with a very limited budget but a decent amount of technical skills, what .22 would you recommend I get? Probably just going to punch paper with it, although hunting small game like gophers or rabbits would be fun in the future.

Cooey single shot bolt action is gonna be as cheap as you're going to get. Get a Remington 597 for the price of 3 dinners and movies and you'll be a lot happier.

Maybe go bottle collecting to up yer budgit?
Place a WTB EE ad in the prawper ###shun and say you wish folks

Cooey 60 might be a good choice -- tube fed bolt action. Easy to put a scope on it with a readily available Weaver side mount if it has factory holes.

Lowest I have ever paid for one is $86. They seem to be about $120 or so in my area now.

You said you don't want a semi auto but if you did I highly recommend any of the Savage 6 / Stevens 87 models. They range from $100 to $120 in my area. All metal action; no plastic anywhere. Long and relatively heavy barrel makes them pretty accurate.

All of mine are tube fed but I think magazine versions are out there too. I'd go with tube fed. Top dovetail makes it easy to put a scope on. I've used Weaver TO-10 rails on mine and may try Weaver T-22 bases on the next one.

Good luck. Let us know what you find.

I think I will keep my eye out for a nice Cooey 60 local or on the EE. Only reason I hesitate to get a semi auto, is the safety factor. One day I would like to teach my daughter to shoot. A nice, single shot or bolt action I think is a good choice for that. The wife even says she wants to shoot, but only a .22. Plus I always associated a bit of cool factor with a quality bolt action. I have fired Ruger 10/22s and this might not make sense, but there just wasn't enough feedback from it. I never felt that way with the bolt action .22 I fired. Something about ejecting a spent round appeals to me.

Maybe check out some estate sales, but just like tools no one really wants to sell guns. Nothing is ever given away.

I wish. I have been watching for an estate sale. But with how facebook bans advertising guns, I have been having a tough time finding stuff locally (I have to update my location to Lloydminster). Only guns I have seen was a .50cal muzzle loader.

Pop in to your local LGS and let them know what you're after. Guys are always bringing in old stuff and most dealers don't want anything to do with it. Perhaps they could pass your name/number along the the proposed seller, or vise versa ?

I just bought a Cooey 600 from a friend who bought it new in 1969. Said he paid $19 for it back then. lol Anyhow, maybe worth looking at a 600 instead as the receiver is grooved for mounting a scope. I'm not a Cooey Expert but the action looks the same as the 60, the lines on the stock maybe less attractive. The gun balances nicely, shoots well too. $125 ought to get you a pretty decent one.

I have heard of guys, doing the garage sale route, hitting up the senior citizens when they are valuable, and scam some old guy out of his 1040's 22. Just saying only an idea take it or leave it.

Get a used Savage MkII Sir.
I got me one like new condition with a magazine for $175 shipped off the EE!
It's a very accurate and very reliable rifle. One of my favorites to shoot that own of all my rifles to be honest.
Now if I could just find a god damned tech sight for it in Canada...

why not to get a job and get good gun, good scope, good ammo and enjoy it for a long time?

How about instead of assuming people don't have jobs, ask a question. If I can snag a Cooey Model 60 for $120 and it is a good shooter why wouldn't I? I wasn't asking for an opinion on how much I SHOULD spend on a gun. If I want to buy a cheap .22 to throw in the safe why wouldn't I?

I might actually try that. Maybe I can find a steal of a deal locally. I get a good gun and someone local gets a bit of cash.

I will have to look at some reviews. The shear number of .22's available is staggering.

Naminator, if you purchase off the EE the shipping price alone will be over your allotted budget. May I suggest a very viable alternative but only after a caveat.

DO YOU HAVE a VALID PAL??????

Go to yard/garage sales. Maybe not many in your neck of the woods???

Run an ad in your local paper/buy and sell.

Local paper isn't really used much. I am going to go to yard/garage sales when it gets a bit nicer and I am going to poke around on facebook.

Yes I do have a valid pal. I bought a 1952 Russian SKS on Saturday. I just want a .22 and the budget is tight haha.

My vote is to resist the urge to fill the .22 gap until you have more cash. Squirrel away $20 here and there for a few months and buy something half decent. For $200-$300 you can get a nice older Mossberg Marlin or Savage. But if you insist on buying now I think an old Cooey is about as cheap a gun as you will find.
