Looking for a first pistol - Cheap or Expensive?

Outside of a .22 I strongly suggest a .38 or .357 (with the intention of using .38's). Pick up a good used revolver made by S&W, Ruger, or even Taurus.

this in my book is a must have, .357 revolver, you can shoot mild loaded 38's or full power .357mag. And revolvers are clasic firearms with character.

I'm with Woodchopper. Everyone should have a revolver, and if only one, it should be a 357.

I didn't spend all that much on my Taurus 691, and it's very accurate and fun to shoot.

The taste of poor quality lingers long after the joy of a cheap price.;)

You don't need to buy the top of the line, but you do want something reliable and accurate.
A .38 or .357 revolver is always a good starter. Brass is cheap and plentiful, and ammo is reasonable. Reloading is virtualy trouble free.

Auto's are nice, but you have to go chasing yoiur empties.

Hey ACE,

I would recommend that you start with a reasonable quality pistol known for its reliability. Colt, Glock, HK, Sig, Springfield, Browning, S & W and so on make such pistols. You need to think about things like purchase, storage, ammunition, memberships, maintenance and (most importantly) training.

Now, where I come from, a reasonable quality pistol will set you back about $800.00-1,500.00 easy. Higher end stuff can be had for a marginal increase (a Springer TRP can be got for about $1,800.00), but it will be a serious pistol for a serious enthusiast, maybe even a competitor, so you also have to think what you want to do with the pistol as well. If your primary interest is shooting at the range, then a baseline pistol of reasonable quality will fit the bill. If you're going to do IDPA and take tactical courses for the thrill of it (ala Thunder Ranch) then a higher end firearm like the TRP will be more for you. Of course, purchasing a pistol for self defense here in Canada is out of the question! However I would wager a person betting thier life on their pistol would agree that you get what you pay for, just before they put on their IDPA rig. ;)

Then we have the high end stuff, like Les Baer, Dan Wesson, Ed Brown, Nighthawk, Wilson Combat (to name but a few), which is where I intend to go sooner or later (I admit it, I'm a 1911 junkie)! You can get truly custom rigs but that's maybe a bit down the road...
