I am looking to buy a spotting scope for the range for use out to a maximum of 200 yards.

I just need it to look at the targets up to that distance. Clarity, brightness, and size of the eyepiece is more important than the ability to zoom a great distance.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a spotting scope that fulfills those requirements for about $200?

merrils or rockports. not sure anything other than a good pair of shoes will get you a good look for that price. Not anything that won't frustrate you

really unregistetered, you won't be happy with anything at that price, It will be made in china, the glass will be bad and you will leave the range unhappy everytime. double your budget and find something used, but for $200 new I don't think you can find ANYTHING that will help you out.

There are plenty of options for a spotter to work at 200 yards that will not be frustrating to use, The Celestron Ultima 65mm, great value for the money. FS

CHeck out Pentax. I have a 20-50x and paid just a little over $300 at London Drugs here in Vancouver. I can read the 1in high print on traffic signs at 500yds. Pentax optics are always good and have used this spotter for several years now. People that use it at the range usually go and buy one after. They allowed me a 30day inspection so I was able to take it out to the range and really check it. 200m is easy for this spotter. I think London Drugs does online sales too.

Thanks for the suggestions and PMs, everyone. I checked JeffR's Vortex Scope suggestions, but they were all sold out in New York. I will look at the other options now, they all sound good. Because of the nature of optics, I will be looking at buying new before buying used, but I will consider all options.

EDIT: I wonder what is better -

The Leupold Sequoia Kit 15-45×60mm

Or

The Celestron Ultima 80 20 to 60x80 Straight Spotting Scope

(I am considering the Pentax too, but I'd have to find and order a tripod to match)

The Celestron 80mm will gather lots of light, but in my opinion is too large a piece for only using out to 200 yards, great scope for the money and you will use it for many other things than just at the range. The moon will look interesting at 40 power. FS

Any good camera shop will give you a choice of tripods but look for one that collapses well and is fairly ridgid otherwise no matter how good the glass is all you get is jitter. Expect to pay at least $100 for a decent tripod and dont skimp although you might find a tradein or sale item at this time of year.
